End of Season Media Availability - Management ( 10 PST)

i joked that they'd lose their 1st but it'll probably be another token fine like benning got when he talked about subban

Yeah, maybe a later draft pick but I don't foresee this actually being a big deal. The NHL mostly just slaps guys on the wrist for doing this just to remind them to shut the hell up.

Yeah I don't think an off-hand joke is going to cost you a draft pick. Significant penalties would be for actually attempting to tamper i.e. contacting the player/agent through back channels.

Willander wants to go back to school? That's insane, he's already NHL ready.

Yeah that's crazy. Pretty commendable if he actually wants to finish another year. But wow, giving up a possible NHL paycheck would be tough to turn down. Maybe he's a smart kid though and doesn't really care to go make $50,000 in Abbottsford next year either. He may think a year of college is preferrable to that. Who knows, it's been reported in some places that a deal is likely for next season. Since he hasn't signed yet both sides have a lot of time to work on it.

The team seems destined to dig further and double down on mortgaging all its prospects and futures to get a playoff team for the next two years. Reality is that maybe they should just trade Hughes and Pettersson and rebuild.

We've already burned through most of our assets, so screw it, we might as well go all-in. The prospect pipeline’s shot, and we blew any shot at sustainability by not restocking our forward assets when we should have. We may as well make one last hail mary push with Quinn, and set the stage for the inevitable rebuild down the line.

Some interesting takeaways:

Confirming that something very significant happened around Petterson/Miller. Sounded more like an event that precipitate a necessary change, even though it was clearly an underlying issue for some time. Changed the chemistry of the team. I thinks this was the general consensus. This is just confirmation.

Open to making significant moves in the summer to bolster forward group. EP not off the table. 1st rounder and prospects not off the table. In fact, it sounds like they expect to move some significant assets.

Willander going back to school was a surprise.

Want Demko back but term has to be right.

They will hand Hughes a blank cheque. Whether he wants to come back is the question.

JR tampering cracked me up.

That was because the twins had expiring contracts and was about to be UFA.
I guess Luke is a rfa now but he can’t be offersheet so can we really tamper?

Yeah that's a good point. I think most of the tampering issues do come from pending FAs, and the league doesn't like all the players having deals done before July 1 and signing within like 30 seconds of the opening bell.

Wouldn’t surprise me at all if they seriously consider a Willander trade this offseason. He is THE piece to acquire a legitimate top 6 forward. Feels like a perfect storm.

Why can't he be offersheeted? He appears to have all the eligibility requirements. That said, it would be incredibly stupid as they'd be looking at 11 million + a year and giving up 4 1st round picks.

We knew it was no surprise that Quinn wants to eventually play with his brothers, but hearing it from Rutherford makes it feel real and scary. The nightmare scenario is if it becomes painfully obvious to the entire NHL that Quinn will only go to New Jersey and we end up losing him for nothing. From my perspective, if he’s not willing to commit within the first week of his extension eligibility, we should trade him immediately.

This is not a contract negotiation we can win. We offer him the max that we're willing to give on day 1, and if he says no, we move on.

I thought he was in the same situation Quinn was in coming out of the ELC where he is not eligible for offer sheet

I wonder how possible it is to package Willander and pick 15 to move up into the top 3.

I don't think it makes sense to move a 20 year old ready to turn pro prospect for an 18 year old prospect unless we're kicking off an actual rebuild.

The move here is probably move Willander for a legit piece up front in an attempt to make the team not suck so much that Quinn Hughes considers staying. The calculus really comes down to: If Hughes isn't sticking around, we're going to have to blow this up completely.

The fact he mentioned it says everything

Before it was kind of like a little bit of a joke, now it’s completely real
