End of Season Media Availability - Management ( 10 PST)

Yeah I think that lines up with what Tocchet said. Petey seems extremely introverted and that might be the thing that makes it hard.

Asking an introvert to inspire others is like asking an introvert to not be an introvert, hence it taking so long to get buy in.
I totally agree. It is harder to step out like that as an introvert. They need to appeal to his pride. I certainly believe he's a proud guy.

Offer sheeting Luke is pointless. NJ has more than enough cap space to match and fill out the remaining holes in their roster (depth forwards). This isn't an Oilers situation from last year.

Also the Canucks obviously don't need to be dumping a huge amount of cap space on another D.
Do they, around 12 million to resign Luke, get a top six forward, and a reliable back up goalie while filling out your roster isn’t a ton. They probably look to trade Dougie Hamilton once his NMC ends.

Also, I know Rutherford said Quinn would like to play with his brothers I still don’t buy it.

That's not what was said. What was said was that EP needs to "buy in". Now, how do we interpret that? My interpretation was they want EP to level up like Yzerman and Crosby did. These guys dragged their teammates into the fight. There was never any question of effort. Teammates looked to them for inspiration. Things like work ethic, passion to win, holding teammates accountable, when giving your best find a next level etc.

Just because a guy is good offensively and defensively doesn't mean he has these intangibles that are absolutely required from your best player if the team is going to be a contender. I think that was JR's point.

This is 100% what I took away from it too. They want him to up his work rate on a shift by shift basis to keep the team, and himself, in the fight. I thought he did an excellent job of this in 2022/23, but in 23/24 even when he was producing it was often touch and go at even strength in terms of dictating the play.

Feels like we could simplify the end of that presser to this.

You can't push down Myers on the third pair after how well he's played.

What lol? Of course you can. Myers has been acceptable but certainly not too good for the third line if we have better. That's how NHL hockey works when you get older. He's a perfect candidate to get pushed down by younger progressing prospects.

He doesn't fit Mancini's role, he doesn't want to play 10 mins a game when he can go to a rebuilding team and play 15-20 mins a game.

Now you think he's too good to play in a rookie role when he hasn't played a single NA game as a pro? This is laughable.

This is nonsense. He automatically slots in, at the absolute worst, as our #7 dman with a good opportunity to surpass Myers and Mancini on the depth chart on day 1. Myers only has 2 years left. You could argue this team's depth chart is nearly the perfect development opportunity possible for him.

Nonsense without a doubt. It is the perfect opportunity to make the lineup and was designed as such.

Ahh I see - read too fast in my haste to get to work. Thanks for clearing that up!

Yeah I don't disagree with that, especially when you're on the leadership team.

Puckpedia has him as offer sheet ineligible. Idk.

If he is OS eligible, I wouldn’t mind trying. Like anything to be able to keep Quinn around is worth trying, even if you have to overpay Luke.
On the trade board it has a thread on Knies. Apparently since he hit 10 games after he signed (reg and PO) he is eligible to get an OS and isn’t a 10.2 rfa. Luke only got into 5 games after he signed. So he should t be OS eligible.

Very interesting press conference. Some of the interesting/new things I learned:
  1. JR really seem to imply they were considering an offer sheet when he stopped himself and said he wasn't going to show his hand. Not sure what other means of improving the centre position there was (he had discussed trades and free agency);
  2. Confirmation that JT requested the leave of absence the implication being that the leave of absence wasn't a penalty forced on JT. The latter interpretation of the facts seems to have been the prevailing view on here, so this flips upside down how we all thought things went. JR also talked about how much he respected JT which suggest there wasn't some egregious thing that JT did wrong. JT also discussed how he though it wasn't just the JT and EP, but that other players were involved. Overall, not good at all, and it seems an open question as to whether trading JT even fixes the chemistry issue;
  3. More on the JT and EP situation, but as others have suggested, management really seems to have preferred JT, and if not for age, would have traded EP. JR specifically referenced looking at other options other than trading JT which obviously meant trading Pettersson;
  4. Comments on Pettersson and his injury in response to Brough. Made it pretty clear that Pettersson's knee was fine this year and specifically addressed the icing of the knee at the Four Nations which was an unrelated injury. Acknowledged that the injury impacted his off season training, but seem to suggest that his training was poor and that Pettersson didn't avail himself to the resources available to a professional athlete to train and rehabilitate his knee. Seems to lineup with the Cam Robinson rumour regarding his training, and also is consistent with @Soups On posts about loading the knee / rehabilitation;
  5. More on Pettersson, but again, management referenced that he wasn't practicing hard enough in season, so this definitely appears to be an effort thing, at least from management's perspective. Seems to be part of the "buy in" theme.

I just think the whole tidbit he added about Hughes playing with his brothers is pure incompetence. There is quite literally 0 need to put that out there, it accomplishes absolutely nothing and just puts more pressure on Quinn making things real awkward.

Willander not signing also might be more related to wanting NHL ice time commitment on the Canucks and certainty he won’t get traded to a team with stronger depth who will bury him in the AHL to start. Seems more likely to me, where management is trying to keep “options” open for as long as possible, than being incredibly stingy on an ELC.

This is correct. Luke Hughes is 10.2 (c), not RFA.

Baffled by the talk about Petey's defensive play, his offense sucked this year but I thought he was fine defensively, it's never really been an issue for me. Even Tocchet on Friday was talking more about his offense and getting to the middle of the ice.

Petey's knee swelling up at 4 nations marks the 2nd straight season with knee issues, they really need to encourage him to visit some specialists, just telling him to practice and work harder isn't the solution imo. The dude's left knee(iirc) looked swollen in a social media pic a few weeks ago with the team dog.

Also getting tired of the "practice harder" answer these guys give to half the questions they get asked about team improvement, take some responsibility yourselves and admit that the roster was flawed even with JT on it.

Rutherford dropping a Gary Roberts reference, who he traded for in *1997*. God he's old.

Also seemed to indicate he's thinking about offer sheets.

Ya, I thought the same thing when JR referenced not showing his cards. But what centre could be offer sheeted this year? @Vector !

willander wanted to turn pro last offseason and the canucks showed only mild interest in signing him for whatever reason. i don't believe at all that willander wants to return for his junior year. this is all about the contract

Ya, this is just posturing. JR is calling Diamond's bluff about going back to school. No doubt Diamond said that Willander would be comfortable going back to school if he didn't get the ELC he wanted, and JR is just calling that bluff.

One thing to keep in mind....the Tkachuk brothers wanted to play together. Many thought it was a foregone conclusions they'd find their way onto the same team.

But ultimately when the money is fair players usually end up signing.
Way different situations though. Brady signed his contract after scoring 36 points in 56 games. He absolutely would have taken a risk by not accepting that contract offer since his play may not have progressed, and he could have subsequently been out millions and millions of dollars. Quinn Hughes is getting paid, no matter what. Whether he signs in Vancouver, or New Jersey, or where ever else, he's getting paid top dollar. Plus, Brady signed his contract at age 22. Brady will be 28 when his current contract expires, and will still be in his prime then and can go and sign with Florida if he wants. Hughes is basically coming up on this same event but earlier, and if anything, what Hughes does is going to influence how worried Senators fans should be about Brady Tkachuk.

I agree, but in fairness, none of the media asked any question regarding roster construction.

JR and LL

two old guys in the OBC, one plays his cards as tight to his chest as humanly possible, the other just has no concept of holding back information.

what is to be gained by even uttering a joke/statement that QH once said about playing with his brothers? is it for his club team? is it for olympics? 4 nations?

and why would Quinn say that to his President/GM? prime them to trade him, leave him out of their future plans? why make him captain then? Is it Quinn's gamesmanship to get the team competitive quick?

this has to be frustrating to Allvin, everytime when you put a microphone in front of JR, extra info that should not be exposed to the Vancouver media gets out there and keeps that media spotlight on this team and their really private stars. Didnt Boeser and Myers say that management should keep the media away from their locker room? didnt confirming the EP/JTM beef further erode their room chemistry, on-ice play?

I wonder, is it an agreed upon symbiotic relationship like the royal family and tabloids? so the team can stay relevant???? there is no need, this is the only big show in town man....

All optimism should be out the window from that presser.

Mgmt has clearly lost the plot.

1. Basically says Hughes is out the door.
2. Basically says Willander isn’t signing thus reducing his value in a trade.
3. Praises Miller (whom they traded) and throws EP under the bus.
4. Basically confirms Tocchet is pretty much out the door.
5. Acknowledges they will pay any asking price for a Top 6 C.

Holy f***.

What a shit show.

I will say I am liking our management less and less.

If they preferred JT, they should have kept him and traded for a younger asset with Pettersson... Thats idiocy.

Clearly no matter what they say his knee is currently still an issue... you can't say its not an issue... well it did swell up and need treatment at this point... but its not an issue. thats just stupid pointless talk. They chose to keep Pettersson, and talking him down in the media has clearly not worked... there is countless examples of it not working... his knee is clearly an issue a year later if its swelling up. Just what are they doing?

I still don't completely by this effort and practising thing... it seems to me that it wasn't a problem until he changed trainers, and even then it wasn't a problem until he was injured, and only became a problem when it sounds like his rehab didn't go well/ wasn't good enough. Like I would like to ask management.. think he was practising hard enough because he was injured...

Its just they way they seem to handle their business is so messy and always seems to be against what they want is some way.

This isn't to talk about his attitude towards. I can't comment on that, just what we seem to have been able to piece together.
