I love this team(the maple leafs) and always will. It’s hard for me to support how soft and shit they are built right now and constantly watching them piss away talent for free while watching Dubas with that dumbass smirk trying to tell us we’re all wrong and we just have to follow the process.

The reason this build hurts the most is cause there was something special and they blew it in spectacular form. That Tavares signing was just awful on every level, I saw it from the beginning made a thread and everyone said I’m crazy. It literally destroyed the cap and didn’t allow the leafs to round out depth. I am one of the ones who kinda fears Matthews’ loyalty. So in 2 years this great potential and what could of been will likely be a wasnt

Myself and every Leafs fans I know in person has developed this dark, fatalist attitude the past year or so. We laugh at how anything that could go wrong likely will, and when it does we just chuckle and shake our heads. I dont think anyone is really emotionally invested anymore. Especially since last playoffs.

I think we’ve reached the moment in this Leafs era akin to when a roller coaster gets to the top and it’s that weightless moment before the big drop crashing down to earth.

The apathy and deadness from the team just makes me think we’ve reached the end of the line and we’re a lengthy losing streak away from a roster shakeup and a regime change. We didn’t even have a dead cat bounce after the Montreal series. They didn’t even come out hungry after that.

No, the Tavares signing was not awful. Nobody could have predicted the pandemic and its effect on the cap. Without that, the cap would have gone up and things would have been fine (or at least better).

Tavares means far more to this team than you seem to realize. Look at what happened to them when he got hurt against Montreal.

As for Matthews' loyalty, yeah I'm with you. I was never sold on him. Great talent, but just not sold on him. I'd offer Edmonton Matthews, Marner, and whatever else they wanted for McJesus if they were dumb enough to do that (yeah I know the cap wouldn't work, but a guy can dream).

The leafs have choked before and after Tavares. Has he not been playing this year?
He’s never been a truly elite player IMHO. I get he had some elite years but overall he’s just not a consistently elite player who drives play.

The worst part was signing him before securing Matthews and Marners deals

Not like they won against Boston or Columbus with Tavares

The last time I was this emotionally divorced from this team was the year that they tanked for Matthews. I'll watch the playoffs if they make it, but they need to earn my viewership at this point.

I've watched like 40% of our 6 games so far

Very happy for it. Watch highlights and read these gdts but at this point

Finishing last in the league and blowing the core up fully and making the playoffs and getting out again in the 1st round are equally desirable

I won't have actual expectations about this team until they play a 2nd round team. The last guy I like on this team looks likely to walk as a UFA in the offseason

No but those weren't the same Leaf teams. Last season's team was in the playoffs and was cruising until he got hurt. Without him, they curled up and died.

As a kid, I would cry after Leaf losses. As a result, this team is in my DNA, I care. It pisses me off when I see the heartless, gutless culture of this team. I am PVR'ing alot of the games so I don't waste 3 hours of my life on something that doesn't put food on my table.

Only the leafs would hire the most spineless p***y bitch in the history of nhl gm’s to take over the greatest collection of talent in the franchises history..

Not Dubas' fault they are not performing. He has set them up for success time and time again. They failed under Babcock/Lou, and now they've failed (so far) under Dubas/Keefe.

The one fatal mistake that may cost him is trusting Marner specifically to perform and live up to realistic expectations that he should have been able to live up to... Something every other successful GM has had the "luxury" of doing without even a second thought, and has happened with Matthews and Nylander.

Unfortunately the only thing that has improved around Marner in the past 3 or so years is the rest of the team around him. He pretty much peaked at 22, and the rest of his success is directly correlated to getting a better center (first Tavares, then Matthews) and the related improvements they made in their games. Should have been a blue-chip investment, but has pretty much only been a bust.

Tavares is a useless pylon. Spending 11 million on dish soap would have garnered the same results as having him in the lineup slugging his cement boots up and and down the ice. Signing wasn’t terrible at the time but we all knew there were risks.

Why would I care when the team doesn't even care?

That being said, I'm on a message board talking about it the night after another embarrassing loss so I must care a bit.

I know a lot of older people from this area were laughing when I said this rebuild was different, look at the rookies we have.

Yea.......same old Leafs. They ain't rookies anymore, honeymoon is over.

We shall see I guess. Marner seems to me like a microcosm of the team.. highly skilled with everything looking great on the surface but a propensity to disappear in big moments.

For the first time in about 20 years I switched the leafs game off half way and played video games instead. I sat through all 82 games during the Toskalol era, Stajan on line, Lebda on the blue line, Bozak as the 1C etc. you all know the shitty teams I'm talking about, but this is unbearable. I've lost the love I had for this team/roster. I want everybody fired from Shanahn, to Dumbass to Keefe and a MAJOR roster shakeup, aka f*** off Mitch the highest paid winger in the league.

I agree the Tavares contract is a big detriment to us right now. He is not an 11 million dollar player. However while patting yourself on the back remember this whole pandemic thing that's happened has caused a flat cap the last two years and likely minimal increase for at least the next two-three years? In a normal world like we all would have predicted the moment those contracts were signed we're likely looking at a cap that is closer to 90 million right now and increasing steadily making Tavares and our other big contracts much less of an issue.

The Leafs have become an on the job training center for players, coaches and managers. And, imo, Kyle is ready to graduate and become an assistant to an assistant GM for a real team.
