An 11 percent chance of finishing 27th or higher.

Tankeriffic.

No doubt, the USS Sabre is still heading straight for that iceberg and I'm pretty sure we are going to hit it.

This team is not going to do much winning this year, bank on it.

Oilers have won three in a row and are now five points clear of the Sabres, along with the Panthers. Calgary is 7 points up.

Seems even with regime change, the Sabres are still looking at at least the #2 pick in the upcoming draft.

Very unpopular, but I give props to Darcy.

He constructed a team solely for the purpose of acquiring top picks, and it looks like he built the perfect team to accomplish just that. Hopefully we don't try to fix it too much until at least the end of the 2015 draft.

Offersheet scenario: Ryan O'reilly?
(i know how unlikely this is)

Assume the Sabres have a top 3 pick...

Is this the year to make a RFA spash? Is it better to get a player that fits exactly what we need then to draft a top pick player who has "prospect question marks"?

based on last year's compensation levels, we can offer up to a 6.7ish cap hit, and the compensation would be a 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Would Colorado match such an overpayment (contract), when the return is high high quality picks?

Obviously, we don't want to go higher than that, and have to give up TWO 1sts, given the McDavid sweepstakes...

we are likely to still have a quality 1st rounder from the Isles...

I'd take O'reilly over Reinhart (i think...)

Lock in a 50-60 pt, high character/leader, who plays a beautiful 200 ft game, and can basically play anywhere in your top 6.... and take pressure off the rest of the young lineup... seems like an ideal use of our "top pick".

It also speeds up the rebuild, by turning an 18 year old top pick, into a 22 year old proven top 6 forward...

An offersheet this offseason would use 2015 picks. Free agency opens after the draft

I'd be down with that. They also have the likelihood of having another first from the Islanders out there to keep the talent influx coming in.

ROR would give them the heavy d-zone start center they've been missing for oh, 6 years or so. It also lets them slot Hodgson into the heavy o-zone starts that we have seen contribute to driving his numbers. It's a win-win and while there may be those who don't like the idea of giving up the potential of a nebulous draft pick... O'Reilly is right now a pretty ****ing good hockey player that a team would hope a top three pick might turn into. Take the player in this case, don't bank on hope.

I like the thought process Jame, but giving up high draft picks is the worst possible thing that this franchise could do.

nonsense...

draft picks are a commodity. and that commodity is to be used to acquire talent. drafting a player versus trading for a player... makes no difference.

your aren't "giving them up"... you are using them

the only conversation is what or who you are using them on...

I already acknowledged the mistake in the offersheet scenario

My reply was regarding trading high picks in general, I would not trade our 2015 1st obviously

I'd definitely use our 2014 first(s) as trade commodities

I would too. I think this draft ('14) is the draft to do it.

We heard it ad nauseum when Regier was rumored to try and trade to the top of the '13 draft -- teams don't move those picks. I really wonder what the return could be if a team (Buff) does move them.

problem with this theory is that even as the worst team in the league you only have a 25% chance of winning the lottery and let's face it, it's Buffalo. You know they'll end up with the #2 pick in 2015.

25% assuming you only have one lottery pick.

Either way I see us gettin the 2nd pick and me being pissed off. I wouldn't be surprised if they rigged the lottery somehow if he truly is as good as they say.

Unless you have another top 5 pick, it doesn't go up drastically with a second pick. Last overall and another pick near 10 gets you...what...26%?

As a true buffaloinian, I'm already anticipating the doom of the Sabres sitting at #1 in two years, on lottery day, anticipation killing us all.... and then losing McDavid

Maybe the Sabres can hire the kid who has been the representative for the Cleveland Cavaliers to rep the Sabres at the next two draft lotteries. The kid's helped to get Cleveland 1st overall picks in the 2013 and 2011 drafts.

McDavid would be great, but even without McDavid next year's draft looks to be good, or so I've read.

I absolutely hate the route of offersheet, I personally think it would be a terrible way for a new GM to start his tenure. If you want ROR then you try and work out a trade for him.
