If Vancouver has already softened their stance on not retaining any part of his salary, clearly they were asking around and did not like the trade packages that were offered. I think a ep40 trade will end up returning much much less than fans expect. #9 is a pipe dream.

Elias has without a doubt the worst contract in the entire nhl. You need to add two firsts just to make a team consider taking it.

I'm just gonna say this for anyone who thinks EP's cap hit is somehow untradeable. The NHL cap:
2026-27 - 104.5 million
2027-28 - 113.5 million
2028-29 - 123 million
Those are the NHL's own projections. If we go forward and assume the cap is only gonna go up $6 million from there each year since by 2030-31 when his contract ends, the cap will be - and this is a very conservative number, $135 million. Worst case scenario, if he's declined to being a 60 point 2C, there are plenty of teams now that can fit that number into their salary budgets going forward. You guys are still judging cap hits like it's the COVID era where everything is static. The cap is going up 20 million in just three years, it's actually rising at a faster rate than salary inflation. Contracts like Petterson's is gonna go from borderline terrible to risky to slightly overpaid in like a 3 year span.
Vancouver won't have to retain to trade Petterson.

I’ve said it before, the best scenario is for Vancouver to take back a 2 or 3 cap dump in the $4-5M range.

Has nothing to do with cap space, when one of your highest paid players is not living up to his potential, it's going to be hard justifying that salary to the fanbase.
That makes sense if they're gonna rebuild for sure. But the notion that the Canucks have to retain on a center who at his very worst is still a 60 point defensively responsible and under 30 with a compelling upside is ludicrous.
LMAO, FK the fanbase then. It's not their money. If you're a team like the Montreal Canadiens and you got all these guys under amazing contracts, an overpaid Petterson fits your timeline perfectly. His contract expires before Suzuki, Caulfield, Hutson are all up for their big deals and Gallagher, Danault and Anderson all have their deals expire during the duration of Petterson's deal. That sort of timeline works for a lot of teams.

9.25M for a #5 dman is worse than 11.6M on a 2C. Rather have an overpaid second line center, than an overpaid bottom-pair left-side dman.
Ryan Graves at 4.5M also sucks, as he's been touted as an AHLer these days.

If an overpaid EP is not able to pull his weight around all those amazing contracts, not sure how well he would be liked in the locker room. That "timeline" is very long given the term of his contract. I think you just need to accept that the value is going to be little to nothing.
Depends on the team. He wouldn't get a sniff on a team like Montreal or any other team with a top PP

There’s also 33 year old winger Jonathan Huberdeau at $10.5x5.
His very worst is 60 points yet he hasn't come close to that the past 2 seasons....
And dont tell me he was "pacing". You dont get credit for games you dont play and points you dont score
Alright, so since you don't do things like pro-rate for 82 games...
He put up numbers comparable to Brady Tkachuk who is paid $3 million less, is terrible defensively, had a playoffs where he had more 5 minute major than points, plays a much less important position, is and went was just traded for a 9th overall, 25th overall and next year's 1st round pick.
Petterson easily gets a positive return for Vancouver. Teams that are light on centers aren't just gonna wait around for McDavid to hit free agency and enter the sweepstakes.

Pacing isn't 'giving credit' for games not played, is projecting based on scoring rate. And this isn't a small sample size.
You think any player who doesn't play a full season would score 0 points in the missed games if they had? Cause thats kind of inferred.

With how bad the UFA class is and the cap going up, 11.6 really won’t seem unreasonable for a 60-70 pt defensive centre. EP40 is still the highest scoring player from his draft class, and by a decent margin, hell Hischer’s numbers are worse and he’s about to get 12-13m so at this point unless we get value and arent retaining, f*** it we can just keep him. People are already hoping Malhotra will be a 60 defensive centre, let’s get EP40 the wingers he needs and try without all the cancerous Americans in the dressing room (Miller, Hughes, Garland etc)
So just keep him. Nobody cares what he did 3 years ago or how his career numbers measure up agaisnt his draft class. Hockey is a "what have you done for me lately" business. And lately hes fallen well short of what hes paid to do. Some Canucks fans have been making excuses for him for almost 3 years now. His drop of in performance is seemingly everybody else's fault. Yet he always seems to be at the center of the personal drama with the supposed "toxic americans". At what point does the finger get pointed at him?

I agree. Vancouver is better off keeping him and hope he can rehabilitate his game. (And the perception of him as a player). They dont need to free up his cap space right now. See how he does under the latest coach/system. His value isn't likely to drop further than it currently is. With tbe rising cap and a little more inspired play he could be more of a positive asset 2-3 years down the road when the risk to the team aquiring him is far less
Its such a dumb way of thinking of things because that means he should have Tyler Seguin as better than Barkov because Barkov had zero points last year. And don't talk to me about pacing because I only give credit for games played
