It makes sense because the rankings/tiers are not purely based on the model results. They use the model as a starting point and then adjust accordingly based on discussions and feedback.

They make it up based on personal preference making it no better than any fan ranking.

Amazing.

I’m not taking them seriously when they bounce guys up and down like crazy and have quotes like

“Perhaps we were a little hasty pushing him all the way down to Tier 4A last season”

Yeah maybe.

“He works hard away from the puck,” one scout said. “I didn’t know he did that.”

Congrats on being bad at your job.

“He’s good,” one scout said. “I don’t know how good he is. I really don’t.”

Then why the f*** are they talking to you?

“He has not gotten better or worse for me in years,” one analyst said. “He’s just been the exact same dude plugging along.”

Translation: I haven’t watched him in years.

The athletic player rankings are a total joke. It’s a shit magazine.

you have to learn to accept other peoples opinions!

it makes conversation more interesting and expands your own personal wealth of knowledge!

No I don’t, especially not opinions from the athletic.

It is a shitty a magazine and people use it to try to justify their bulkshit constantly.

If you still reference anything to do with doms model, at all, your opinion isn’t worth the time to read it.

Better than your model, I suspect.

The same Athletic tier list that referenced quotes like this in their valuation/ ranking on players

“I don’t know how good he is. I really don’t.”

“He has not gotten better or worse for me in years,” one analyst said. “He’s just been the exact same dude plugging along.”

How am I suppose to take something like this seriously lol

Fair enough, but it still seems like it then becomes based a bit more on style and projection than substance. Pettersson had that kind of hype coming out of his rookie and sophomore season, and then his struggles with injury and poor play seems to have made him old news a bit despite putting it together last year. I think Hughes having the big year at his age and being a former #1 pick will put expectations high that he takes another step. And as others have pointed out, some of the quotes aren’t a good sign of quality insight.

For what it’s worth I do think Hughes is a better offensive player. He’s arguably the best off the rush player after McDavid in the league and he seems to create more for himself on a shift to shift basis than Pettersson does, who, while capable of some flashy brilliance himself is a bit more cerebral and tends to pick his spots a bit more. Hughes had similar production but that was without a strong linemate with chemistry like Kuzmenko and with a weaker PP. He also had a down period of production surrounding an injury.

Pettersson is better defensively though, but both are pretty good for top line players, and while I think it’s an advantage for Pettersson, it’s not like he’s scoring 100 while in a high leverage matchup role where he’s shutting down the opposition every night. Both players play similar offensive roles and are strong possession players in them with similar production. To me, it’s hard then to put them on different tiers if you’re trying to win a game tomorrow.

We’re at a point where how many points The Athletic thinks you’ll get is more important than the number of points you actually get.

To be fair, potential is like crack to most of HFboards.

2021-2022 is when he fell off a cliff.
That year he dropped to 57th in league scoring
Yes for half a season the missed training camp made many Canuck fans question WTF but in the last 3 months he was dynamite and all concerns were gone.

Here are his counting stats pre and post all star in 21-22

46-11-13-24
34-21-23-44

EP40 plays a more complete game blocks some shots and hits a bit too and is much better in the dot and deployed with less concern than Hughes so I'm taking him for the overall package here.

EP is more of an impact player. Kuzmenko doesn't have the season that he had last year without Pettersson.

Hughs is the trendy new golden boy. No surprise that he wins this poll. Just like Pasternak won polls like this a couple years ago. But he's not the new thing anymore.

Jack is 2 years younger, signed for 7 more years at 8m per.

Petey is 2 years older, signed for 1 more year, and is likely getting 11+ on a deal in the offseason if he even decides to stay in Vancouver.

I'm not sure how it's a question. Even if you think they're similarly talented players, it's gotta be Hughes by a mile.
That wasn't the question. The question said both for 8 years. So both of their contracts are for 8 years.

Hughes spelled backwards is Sehguh and Pettersson is Nossrettep.

While a Egyptian god sounds cool nothing can beat

I'd Like Canucks fans to argue against these facts!

Canucks got one Sehguh, you got two. The rest of the league got none.

What's your ridiculous beef with Hughes? Keep misspelling his name on purpose in every thread you find him being discussed.

Might be trendy and new to outsiders, but devils fans have been trying to tell people this has been coming for years, and now we’re just coming to say “we told you so”.
