I thought there were times he was itching to bring out Dekey Pete but it's like his confidence is still 5-10% short.

He and Hughes out together was tough to control for Detroit as their skill and IQ was unmatched.

Wish he was more dangerous as a shooter but can't complain about this one.

Damn those “bursts” prevented him from completing a simple saucer pass while on the PP.

And he healed overnight at the start of a home stand. Surprised the training staff didn’t apply that special medicine earlier if it worked that quick.
Awwww... that is adorable.

There were moments where he did the deeky deekies but cant change direction or have any burst of speed to take advantage of the space he created.

You gotta love that play he made to set up the winning goal. You can see his timing is back. No chance he would have tried that play a month ago, much less been successful at it.

Happy he is playing better but he still isn’t dominant.

Step in the right direction but I need to see dominance shift after shift for 11.6M.

The play where he took on 2-3 defenders and got hauled down for a penalty probably won the game for the Canucks with that 5 on 3

Looked like his old dominant self through 40 today before kind of fading in the third, but then had primary assists on the tying and game winning goals. Encouraging play of late.

the play in overtime when he just took the puck towards the middle of the ice and left it for DeBrusk to take it wide? how was that a remarkable play from him whatsoever? He had three points and all three were him passing the puck to a guy who made a play (good pass on the Brannstrom goal though). I didn't think he had a great game today. took a penalty in the first min of the third when they had a lead that allowed Detroit to tie it at 3, then he lost track of Tarasenko who walked in alone on the 4-3 goal.

Hes nowhere near "back". Our expectations have become so low due to his poor play in the past year.

Pettersson in his prime has swagger and confidence that no one can touch him on the ice.

These are prime Pettersson.

Right now hes deferring too much and coughing up the puck randomly.

Yes, he backed off the defence and executed a perfectly timed drop pass for DeBrusk to skate on to at full speed.

If you don't think this is a highly skilled play then I don't know what to tell ya. The only other player on the team who has that kind of vision (and guts to make that play) is Hughes.

Yes, let's go dig up some of Pettersson's all time highlights and complain about why he isn't doing that every game.

It is obvious that his skating has taken a big hit and that affects his ability to make the dazzling play, but he's playing smart and seeing the ice really well. If he hadn't been tripped on that penalty we might have had another all time highlight though, so that's a good sign!

You missed the point of the post. Im not saying he needs to score highlight reel goals. He doesnt have the confidence right now or physical ability to try anything creative or be aggressive. He skates in and defers 95% of the time now.

Thats like if Matthews randomly stopped shooting tomorrow.

Hes obviously playing better, but hes not "back"

it was three on three and Detroit massively overcommitted up ice. he took a pass moved towards the middle of the ice and saw DebBrusk had a chance to take it wide and he left the puck for him. he didn't have to hit a guy in stride, there was literally no deception required or danger in leaving the puck for a wide open teammate (he could see every Detroit player on the ice). that play was mostly Hughes seeing Detroit f*** up and hitting EP in stride with a good stretch pass (hardly remarkable though as he does it probably 10 times/g) and Debrusk with an absolute snipe. Pettersson connected the plays, but didn't do anything particularly special to create the opportunity IMO.

Connor McDavid had a wrist injury last season and went from 64 goals to 32 goals over the season, his lowest number in 8 seasons.

But he put up 100 assists, then broke Gretzky's assists record in the playoffs, but only scored 8 goals.

I guess you would say he wasn't "back" because he wasn't doing the things he used to do in the exact same way. Technically correct, i guess, but that's some horseshit.

I'm very happy to see Pettersson battling out of the doldrums he's been in. Still a ways to go to get back to his true form but these are massive steps in the right direction. I can't really comment much more as to any specifics in his play because I haven't been able to watch much hockey lately. All I can see is the points are starting to come.

What's the point? If you think that's a normal play then you don't know much about hockey.

Most players would get their heads ripped off by their coach for even considering a play like that!
why would a player get their head ripped off for that play? it wasn't a blind drop pass at the blueline with 9 other moving pieces on the ice. he was literally starring right at debrusk and could see he was open. zero risk.
