Speculation: Elephant in the room: Is McDavid going to be the biggest UFA ever in 2026?

first it was 'wait till Drai' leaves and goes to California. Then he quietly signed and that's done.

I've been hearing about McD leaving forever... I think he'll be comfortably signed well before he hits UFA and it will be an announced signing just like Drai.

And I'm sure, when that happens, everyone saying he is definitely leaving will own up just like they did for the Drai signing.lol
He's been leaving since the draft lotto. But to be fair they couldn't possibly have known that he would be too boring to want to move to their city.

??? He could have been offered 20% I think he could have been offered 15?
Yeah I do apologize, I for some reason thought it was 16%.

HOWEVER, his 15.72% is the highest in salary cap history, I think.

No. Richard’s got the full 20. Crosby I think took 17.5% I think.

I’m not saying he’s staying or not but he did leave money on the table. Heck maybe he’s pissed thatthey squandered it so many years and takes them to the cleaners.

No one knows

As much as we like to joke about him coming home, there’s absolutely zero reason to believe he’s not extending with Edmonton at the moment. Not much to talk about.

Edmonton has had its ups and downs but they’re as competitive as anyone in the league right now.
they are the second wild card right now

That's because McDavid and Draisaitl carry them. It's ten years in, his supporting cast is pretty poor considering that.

He’s the best player in the Salary Cap era and the salary cap era always moves up with inflation. McD could have asked for more and the Oilers would have happily paid up. You really don’t have an argument here…

hes staying in Edmonton. between the 2, Leon was more likely to leave but he didn't.

I be surprised if Connor tests free agency.

I'm not arguing that he's overpaid, not in the slightest. I'm calling bullshit on the "he took less so that Edmonton could win".

But he did take less. And his outperformance of the contract along with him saying he took less and the GM saying he took less and analysts saying he took less should confirm that.

Well I guess a guy like MacKinnon took a lot less then because his % of the cap was a lot smaller and he hasn't been that much behind McDavid in the last two years.

But I don't really hear an argument for that.

MacK did take less too…. Thought that was pretty universally seen as a good deal for the Avs.

If I had to bet, he’s staying put. That seems most likely.

Leafs seem unlikely. “Hometown team” is tossed around so often and so rarely comes to pass.

If McDavid leaves it’s about chasing a Cup and/or transcending the sport/ boosting the brand. Best chances at a Cup are south of the border. Only chance at boosting the brand globally is in a place like New York (places like LA and Chicago have Cups in more recent memory, so less impactful).

Again though, signing the next deal in Edmonton seems most likely. Wonder if it’ll be max term though.

Well, what is less is subjective. I don't think anyone thinks it's a bad deal. 15ish % is the going rate for a superstar player these days. They could get more, if they signed UFA for a 7 year deal, pushing for the same full contract value as with their original team.

MacKinnon’s deal also takes him well into his 30s, so there was always going to be some account for that. McDavid’s current deal was for all prime years so it should be a higher cap percentage even if he wasn’t the better player.

This years playoffs for the Oilers are very important. If they’re 1 and done then it significantly lowers the chances of him signing.
