Speculation: Elephant in the room: Is McDavid going to be the biggest UFA ever in 2026?

Only team I can see him leaving for is Toronto. There is the possibility him and his wife want to start having kids in the area they both came from, around their extended family. Do not underestimate the pull a wife has in that scenario.

Leaving for a team like Florida would feel like Kevin Durant to the Warriors, just not something the leagues best in their prime do in this sport.

Draisaitl wouldn’t have stayed if McDavid was planning to leave. He was McDavid’s best man at his wedding. You think they wouldn’t have talked about it?
If a Toronto superfan like Peter Thomson were to dish out 5 or 6 hundred million on top of his NHL contract I’m sure he’d leave the oilers and take Leon’s wife with him. Also is it legal for fans to start a go fund me for something like “bring McDavid to Toronto”. I bet you’d raise a ton of money.

I think because its the NHL it will be dull and he just stays in Edmonton most likely. However if he leaves, I don't really think it will be about the money. He can get the money anywhere, but he can't win just anywhere.

Edmonton is going to be structured to absorb his contract, a lot of teams will have to jump through hoops to take what he will make on AND contend

Surprised no one has mentioned it considering it’s the biggest “open secret” in the hockey community. He’ll be taking his talents to Winnipeg.

Shut it down, he isn’t going to leave. He is like Crosby. He will take a team friendly deal to make sure they have a chance to get the players necessary.
Same was said for Draisaitl and he went for market value with no discount.
Same was said for Bouchard and the last report was 11 million.

These guys aren’t taking team friendly deals

I’d think he would forsure sign an extension… but if they have a rough season this year, I could see him start thinking potentially of other plans

This is immediately where my mind goes. Won't say zero chance McDavid hits the market, but it has to be less than 2% chance of happening.

Toronto will let Tavares walk, sign somebody on a 1 year deal and then make a huge run at McDavid.

He’s coming home.
he said he wanted to win ;)

He’ll be traded if he won’t re sign to a team of his choice and sign an extension there. Players like him just don’t hit free agency.

Having said that, I don’t see him leaving Edmonton unless they missed the playoffs or gets bounced quickly in the playoffs. Hes always wanted to be part of the solution there and they have made a lot of years of progress. Drais signing there long term, pretty much confirmed to me that he’s probably staying there unless something drastic happens that’s negative.

I was reading this article from thescore and a few quotes stood out to me: McDavid: Winning 'all that matters to me at this point in my career'

These comments don't strike me as someone who's burning to stay in Edmonton. I feel the vibes were very different around Draisaitl and his extension.

What do people think? Can Oilers fans give some insight on what they think is likely going to happen after this season? He's eligible to sign his extension July 1st, 2025.
Nah. He's boring so he'll sign an extension before reaching FA.

He would be a fool to not hit UFA if he doesn’t win a cup in Edmonton by 2026

They said the same about Leon

McDavid isn't currently eligible to sign an extension. There's no indication Edmonton will offer anything less than a blank cheque. Talk to me if he's not signed this time next year.

Oilers can officially offer him a contract on July 1st 2025. If he is not signed by September 1st 2025? This board will be fun

That would be great for hockey and create a ton of hype but NHL players are so boring and conservative he will get his deal before that

I love how this is an "Elephant in the room" topic, like it must be talked about and no one wants to say anything.

As if Jealous haters haven't talked about and day dreamed about McDavid leaving since Day 1.

3 MAX Term extensions later (1 by McDavid, 2 by McDavid's best buddy Drai) and a Hall of Fame career in Edmonton where he's shown nothing but wanting to keep playing for this franchise, and apparently the day dream's still not dead.

The odds of McDavid going to Free Agency are about as high as the Leafs odds of winning the cup this season.

He has the attitude and personality of plain white rice, just don’t think he has it in him to put himself in the spotlight like that.
I'm struggling to guess what you mean in saying McDavid has an attitude of plain white rice.
