Eichel

If the Leafs didn't have Matthews I could see a case being made for a Marner/Eichel swap.

This is a non starter for me, Eichel is a good hockey player when healthy and motivated, but I haven't seen enough of those two components together so far at any time in his career. Other than the contract (LeaFlanders brought to you by Dreger) nonsense Mitch has been healthy and is almost always the best player on the ice, he is first, a team guy who knows his place in the hierarchy.

People talk about Ho-Sang and his "problems" but I don't think there's been a time he ever went to the owner to get a coach canned, rumour has it Eichel did, I really don't care how good the player is, the coach is the boss and there are no circumstances in which as a player you go above his head or the GM's for that matter. If the coach is that bad the GM will know and will pull the trigger.

To be fair though what good what it have done talking to Tim Murray, Pegula was/is in charge there.

you said you’d attempt to sign at the end of his contract.

when he is UFA.

wouldn’t you agree that it is prudent to sign him before that last year and if unsuccessful, move on lest risk him walking for nothing?
Impossible to know options without being in the war room.

You know the situation. So you know the options.

You may not know which one is the most prudent but there are only a few ways it can go.

1. Sign
2. Own Rental
3. Trade

So you plan for each.

What’s Matthews asking price?

Both are irrelevant questions right now.

A GM needs to know his ceiling on a contract and the market value of his player.
You said it you're asking Irrelvant questions then. Answer McDavid. We can add if we like So thanks for this game Pookie!

Knowing what YOU can pay isn’t irrelevant.

Knowing what YOU would want in a trade isn’t irrelevant.

Some would call this “strategy” .... or he could do nothing and wait for it to blow up

Seeing between now and what 3 years the top 50 point producers will be shuffled quite well. So it's not that easy Pookie.

Edit: but again McDavid.

You’ve got to make your decision on 34 by the end of next year.

His full NMC kicks in that final year of the deal. And you are then at the whim of his agent.

These factors are known.

Which means that soon, you’ve got to get an idea as to what you can pay and what he and his agent are seeking.

At the same time, you need to quietly start feeling out the market.

And you need to find out internally how your owners feel about potentially moving a marquee name.

There are a lot of things to start working on. Even if he isn’t showing his cards

If a deal (in principle) is not possible following the 22-23 season, you trade him before his NMC kicks in on July 1st.
