See, IMO this question can be answered very simply with another question; do the Leafs NEED ANOTHER $10 millon center when they have two already? And the answer, is no.

And then there's the injury he sustained last year. He's not going to play this year because of it. Will he even be 100%, or even 60%, when he comes back?

If dubas really feels all in.

then why not go the Kuch route. Trade for eichel with futures. LTIR until playoffs. Then trade him next summer after paying his bonus.

or alternatively trade marner or nylander.

galaxy brain idea but the leafs have the money and the medical staff.
It’s a huge risk but if his job is on the line……

Also. For LTIR insurance only covers 80% right. So what team is going to pay 2 million for eich to sit on the shelf?

such an odd situation.

You’ve got to make your decision on 34 by the end of next year.

His full NMC kicks in that final year of the deal. And you are then at the whim of his agent.

These factors are known.

Which means that soon, you’ve got to get an idea as to what you can pay and what he and his agent are seeking.

At the same time, you need to quietly start feeling out the market.

And you need to find out internally how your owners feel about potentially moving a marquee name.

There are a lot of things to start working on. Even if he isn’t showing his cards

Anything less he should not be our GM

If I was reasonably confident of Jack Eichel's health I would trade him for anyone not named Matthews. You can even make the case that Eichel at 100% is a better player than Matthews.

The problem is that his health is a massive question mark. I would not take the risk, that contract is just too large if he isn't healthy.

how in the world can you possibly claim that eichel is better than Matthews?

Year over year it hasn’t been close

First, I didn't make such a claim. I said that it is possible to make a case for it when Eichel is 100%. This is a very different statement.

Second, here are some reasons you could make a case for it:
- Their point totals are quite comparable before Eichel suffered his serious injury. Look at 2017-2018 through 2019-2020. Their (per game) point totals are extremely similar, with Matthews obviously having more goals and Eichel more assists. Even if you don't use per game it's not that different.
- Eichel did this is on the worst team in the NHL.
- Some of this is subjective from having watched both players, although I've seen much more of Matthews. I've seen both guys do amazing things.

If I was asked who I think is better when both are at 100% I would say Matthews, mainly because he is probably the best goal scorer in the league right now and scoring goals is the point of the game. However, I think it's crazy to act like there is some massive chasm between the two players when both of them are at their best.

The reason this thread even exists is because Eichel is not at his best and may never be. Eichel's value is nowhere close to what it was and it won't be until he shows he can play at that level again.

thats the thing, what are his stats in the playoffs so far.... :sarcasm:
I think he got 0 goal for the last few playoffs. Pretty much the same as one of our 10mil plus player. Lol
At the same time his advanced stats on the defence side are amazing bc opposing teams could score on his line 5 v 5 or 4 v4 in the playoffs. Lol again
