In this context of the Ehlers thread, I think he should be the top priority. Why not both? The Jets have 40M in cap space. Where is all that money going?
I have some time for extending Neal, but not at the expense of losing Ehlers

Some team figured out how to beat the system.Except for Buffalo who drafts high every year and just stays bad as they trade out previous high picks for more high picks that they will one day trade for more high picks.
I agree it would be a HUGE mistake to trade Ehlers off, or not resign him shortly. He has been underutilized by previous coaches, for the talent he brings. He is averaging over a point per game this year, and in my mind, with powerplay #1 time, he is a 80 -90 point player. He's the kind of player you hope you can pick up, if you don't have a player like him. He is really a 1st line player on most all teams, and really is better than Villardi who plays on our 1st line.Trading him away in a year we have a legit shot at the cup is what could be a massive mistake. If we were a bubble team I would agree completely. We are not. Time for this team to win together this spring.
Unless he's traded to a team that knows he's going to re-sign, you're getting your typical rental price of "late 1st and B prospect" at the deadline for himAgain an unpopular take but letting Nik walk to free agency would be a massive mistake for this organization, either re sign him or move him the sooner the better. I could be proven wrong and would be glad about it but I think he has already made up his mind and he will test the market. I also think that Chevy and Co. know this.
Both are stupid, what's your point?I can agree with this. I don't think we want to get rid of our 5th or 6th most important player
Paying Pionk $6.5 will be a bigger mistake than paying Ehlers $8.5 for sure
One is not stupid. Both are stupid, what's your point?
Which one?One is not stupid.
Signing Ehlers to an extension around his market value is not stupid. If ypu hadn't gathered those were my thoughts yet...Which one?
Chevy will. People don't like uncertainty, so they will worry until it gets done. Please re-sign here Nik.
Please show me the market value of a recent high of 61 points.Signing Ehlers to an extension around his market value is not stupid. If ypu hadn't gathered those were my thoughts yet...
Chevy has never gone the own rental route on a player as important as Ehlers, and I don't expect it to happen now.I have learned to not worry too much about what Chevy is up to when it comes to signing and extending players. I don’t know what the plan is for Nik but to me I would be surprised if we use Nik as an own rental? That seems like an unlikely but not impossible scenario.
I do not see how you can say signing Ehlers for $ 8.5 is stupid ? His market value would be that and more as a UFA. I believe Nylander, the same kind of player is getting around $ 10 - 11 per year, with Toronto. What do you think his market value is ?Both are stupid, what's your point?
Show me the comparable. His recent high is 61 points and garbage in the playoffsI do not see how you can say signing Ehlers for $ 8.5 is stupid ? His market value would be that and more as a UFA. Ehlers at $ 8.5 mil is a very solid deal, both ways.
As for Pionk at $ 6.5 mil. - not sure what to think on him yet ?

All I can say is Yup.My take, I don't think Nik has any intention of signing here. He has spent his whole career playing second fiddle. Players want to be played in the way they think they deserve. He finally made the 1st pp this year (ten years in) but not in the position he is best at and wants to play and still very often plays under 15 mins a night. I think he will want to go somewhere where he can play first line minutes and first pp on the flank.
The only way to make a player stay for less opportunity/responsibility would be to overpay in both term and amount. Ehlers will easily be able to get $9m on a long term deal in the open market, and as much as II think the Jets would like him to come back, they won't want to pay him the same amount that Scheif and Helly make IMO.

Part of the reason I think re-signing him is such a great idea is because GM's think a lot like this when it comes to contracts. We may even get a bit of a bargain...Please show me the market value of a recent high of 61 points.
What is the comparable? How tf are we talking about Ehlers as $8m+ player on a long term?Part of the reason I think re-signing him is such a great idea is because GM's think a lot like this when it comes to contracts. We may even get a bit of a bargain...
First of all the question remains does Ehlers want to be here and does Chevy want to sign him?I do not see how you can say signing Ehlers for $ 8.5 is stupid ? Sir it's been less than an hourFunny how quiet the insane Ehlers fans get when you ask for comparable contracts they expect.
Wish we had more Jets fans on this board..
Funny how you could have replied with a real answer but instead you make this lame reply. It doesn't matter how much time I give you, we both know your expectation of a $8.5m long term has no good comparable for what Ehlers has done to date.Sir it's been less than an hour
