One of the most dynamic hockey players on the planet today bringing to mind one of the most dynamic soccer players ever at 4:04. I realize that Nik likely could have played either sport at an elite level, and had to choose, but there must be some transferable skills.

Now to find the equivalent of this:

He’s great clearly best on team other than Helly. But he’s not in the top echelon. He can’t carry a team in a mcjesus kind of way. Usually reserve “most dynamic” for that caliber.

I myself distinguish 'dynamic' from 'best'. I am not comparing Ehlers to McDavid in the latter category, although his pure skill level – including his speed – must be close.

Arjen Robben has never been considered the best soccer player in the world (although he has gotten close at different moments) but he has undoubtedly been one of the most electrifying athletes in his sport, throughout much or even most of his career.

I have the same feeling watching Ehlers, as much as anyone I have ever seen play hockey. There is the potential for something exciting to happen in a very dynamic sense, on a dime, whenever he touches the puck. And he only seems to be getting better.

"Nikolaj Ehlers had a decision to make, though with the benefit of hindsight, it wasn’t as tough as it probably felt like at the time.
Long before he became a speedy forward with the Winnipeg Jets, Ehlers was a soccer player of high regard, playing on an elite-level team while his father was coaching in Switzerland.
“I used to play on a provincial team in Switzerland,” Ehlers said recently. “They kind of gave me a choice at the end, to either pick hockey or soccer. It wasn’t a difficult choice.”
It’s fair to say that even with the fancy footwork he displays on the ice, Ehlers obviously chose wisely.
But what type of player was Ehlers on the pitch?
“I was a striker — or used on the flank,” he said."

Pure skill I still put McDavid way ahead of Ehlers but I get what you are saying.

Well, if you reckon that Ehlers provides 70% or so of McD’s value at 60% or less of McD’s contract and cap hit I’d say we’re doing well. Especially since we have a balance of talents that don’t require a McD-level super-talent, nice though it would be.

In early to heap kudos on the Electric Ehls for yet another masterclass in hockeying while entertaining the hell out of us. What a player and makes it look so easy. Half expected the Flames to start piling up a la Keystone Cops as he embarrassed them on play after play.

Great game for Ehlers.

Not such a great game for the expected goal meter. Apparently, the Jets only had 0.81 expected goals for with Ehlers on the ice. That includes Scheifele's open net one-timer, his two point blank shots on the drop from Ehlers, and Copp's bang- bang goal from the edge of the crease. That line had some sloppy D, but if they trade Calgary's muddled chances for the clean looks they had the Jets are going to come out ahead on the scoreboard, even though the xG tally favoured the Flames while Scheifele's line was on the ice.

Yeah I was following along the shot counter and it was comical how homerish the stat trackers were. The Jets were credited with 4 high dangerous chances through the first two periods. Just laughably biased they had atleast 6 in the second period alone by my count.

Ever since I realized how biased the tracking could be in some venues I've really soured on individual game XGF%'s. I also don't know how much you can read into it this year given we play in so few venues with greater frequency this year.

Ehlers has been outstanding this season. I know that there has been a lot of buzz about him not getting enough ice time, but he's top 30 among RWs in the NHL in total ice time per game, and I'm not sure he thrives with a much heavier workload, especially when the schedule is heavy. Maurice has alluded to this a couple of times - that they try to keep Ehlers around 17 minutes as an optimum level for his effectiveness. I don't think it's just because Maurice doesn't value Ehlers' performance. It will be interesting to see if Maurice still manages Ehlers' minutes to about 17 minutes / game now that he's playing with Scheifele and Connor.

I've certainly had my share of head shaking over Ehlers' TOI, but it's usually more come about from seeing Schiefele/Wheeler gassed during the final minutes of a game after playing 20+ minutes while Ehlers is at 15. The load management might be resolved by increased 3rd and 4th line playing rather than Ehlers, specifically.

That said, he's so fun to watch I wish he never left the ice.

Getting rid of Laine was the best thing that could happen. Ehlers has always been good but this season he has been amazing and I feel like the departure of Laine has something to do with it.
