Confirmed with Link: [EDM/VAN] Oilers acquire Vasily Podkolzin for OTT 4th '25

Janmark, Brown, Henrique, Arvidsson and i guess J.Skinner supposedly all took discounts to be Oilers. It wasn't dumb to let go of Broberg+Holloway for 6.5M.
Neither had accomplished much at NHL.

Podkolzin deserves 3M per based on his play of late but Oilers wouldn't be offering him that.
Smart GMs invest in potential all the time. Letting Bro go was the right call. Letting Hollow go with his potential was absolute failure.
He has 14 goals ...easy to imagine him with 25 or more this season and easy to imagine that going to 30 plus in the future.
Arguing about 800 or 900 k .....sheer insanity as the first move of a new Oilers GM.

All the team would have needed to do to ice the exact same roster they did to start the regular season with Holloway instead of Podkolzin is swap Philp in for Ryan (which they should have done either way).

The Oilers chose to accrue cap space instead of match. They had the room to get it done.
How do you know Holloway wasn't looking for more than a million a year? And Philp was definitely not ready for the NHL from the few games I saw when he was up.

Kind of need to find out what they do at the deadline before we make that proclamation don’t we?

Player for player, only the blindest of homers would suggest Holloway wouldn’t have been an absolute massive upgrade over Podkolzin. Podkolzin has done an admirable job, but he’s completely miscast in a top 6 role.
No, you make decisions in real time with the information at hand.

No crystal balls required.

I like Pods game. It’s coming along fine.

Podkolzin has generally been good, but he absolutely has to start scoring more if he's going to play a regular role beside a 14 million dollar center. Doing all the little things right is nice but eventually you have to produce for it to actually be meaningful.

That said, I could definitely see this happening.

Nope that will come with time right now he is defence 1st which makes Drai able to take more chances, the offence will come with Pods as he gains more experience

Probably more issue on the line with Arvid. Ideally you need a 2nd on the line that can reliably play and produce. Pods can be a worker ant and that can continue. he's also a better passer than I thought. Scoring hands has never been something he's found in NHL but he's passing reasonably well and has the thought process to also pass into places which is huge when playing with Drai. Maybe one day Pods calms down and starts to develop hands. Sometimes the impression of him is the urgency of impressing here creates some ozone panic and finishing panic.

Disagree there.

Drai is playing at an MVP level and a big part of that is how much Pod gets him the puck.

Stick with what’s working. Forget about the individual stats.

It's also easy to imagine Holloway with Janmark/Podkolzin like stats playing on Oilers this season. He would've been buried in depth if he didn't click with McD or Drai.
I've bashed management enough re Holloway but it's time to move on.. f*** him and whoever encouraged him to sign that offersheet.

Re that Drai line, IMO Kapanen looks better on that line than Arvidsson.

I disagree, Arvidsson is much better offensively, Kapanen was healthier and more prepared. I suspend Arvy will get rolling.

In what world. Arvidsson has been great up there lately.

He’s already better than JP.

The oilers have lots of great problems to have.

Arvidsson looked lost as an Oiler earlier this year, but he's found his game with Drai since returning from Injury. Kapanen's game is flashier, but Arvidsson's is more effective.

Love Podz game. Pure body language read but I think he needs some swagger in his game. It’s like he doesn’t realize that he’s a good player already. He should know that and wear it, then start looking for that next level.

Hold onto that puck. Make some dekes. Bully defences cause your strong enough to. And work WITH Drai not FOR Drai.

Again, I think this environment, the best players here praising him for his relentless work ethic and staying positive about his "lack of production" did wonders for him, I truly believe that's what's help push him to be this effective game in and game out.

He's getting all sorts of opportunities in St. Louis. He would not be getting more than 3rd line minutes and close to zero in PP time in Edmonton. So no, he would not have scored 15 goals by now. Podkolzin's level of production or 5-10 points more is what I would expect on the Oilers.
