I think this has been covered repeatedly. They created enough space to be able to match both if they wanted to and that was reflected in the fact that STL added a pick and prospect to ensure we didn’t match. It wasn’t a lack of cap space thing, it was a didn’t want a guy on the team who didn’t want to be on the team thing, that’s it.
If that's what it was, then Bowman sucks. I don't believe for a second that Holloway didn't want to be here. He just wanted to get paid when we wouldn't pay him. I CAN understand if they didn't think he was worth the contract. But I can't understand that sort of spiteful attitude from a GM.

I don’t know, with Ceci moved and Kane on IR, they had time to match and figure it out.
They only had 10 days to figure it out, that's not a lot of time. Who would you have moved to make it happen, since they had about 5 cents in cap room at the time. Don't forget, you have to get a replacement for Ceci.

Emberson was the replacement for Ceci.

They could have matched Holloway and still had cap room. With Kane there was uncertainty at the time when he would come back but as it turns out he likely won’t be back until the playoffs. This is the Vegas/Lightning way. In fact Bowman did the same thing with P. Kane I believe.

So we actually didn’t have to get rid of anyone and could have simply matched. We wouldn’t have as much cap to work with at the deadline but we’d have Holloway for the next two years at a great contract given his breakout this year. Kid was always going to be a player. If I could tell that then anyone with half a hockey brain would have agreed.

Podz is similar to Pool. But without the learning disability.
Oof that's brutal, you can do better

Ceci has been replaced by stetcher and Emberson, it's why Nurse and the defense is no much more effective. Ceci's departure was absolutely addition by subtraction

Signing a contract with another team is the literal definition of not wanting to be be here. A Stanley cup contending team is offering him a deal that’s in line with what similar rfa’s with similar production are getting and he didn’t want it. If he wanted to be in Edmonton he wouldn’t have even entertained an offer sheet plain and simple. He went the selfish route and put money over the team and winning, which is fine nothing wrong with getting the bag, but that’s exactly why the Oilers didn’t match, because when you’re trying to win a Stanley cup that’s not the type of attitude you want around.

Think McDavid likes this kid?

You're thinking like a fan and not like a business person or employee.

Kid was trying to get paid what he was worth.
Major dumb decision by oilers brass. Shouldn't surprise anyone.

I’m thinking like a guy who likes to win more than anything.

And I’m a guy who’d push his own mother down the stairs to make a buck so I’ll always respect taking the bag but I also understand that there’s certain things in life that money cant buy, like winning a championship. Holloway was always going to make 4 million dollars in his career, far less likely is that he ever gets as good of a chance as he had here to win a cup. A lot of guys in that room respect the business side of it but that’s not an attitude you want around when you’re at the pinnacle trying to win.

Well he’s full value for playing on a loser this year.
He is becoming a major building block for those losers lol. Up to 31 points so far this year.
And he is continuing to improve. Just think on a 62 point pace and improving.

All the Vancouver fan reports I read on the player described him exactly how he has played for us. An incredibly hard worker with an intelligent defensive game. They questioned if he would ever break out offensively. Podkolzin has played this way for a while.
Exactly. It’s the way Podkolzin has always played. The poster you quote didn’t watch any of the games he played in VCR. He just scanned some stats and then started screaming ‘complete bust’ over and over again. Since that has now proven to be an embarrassing ‘observation’ on his part, he’s going to try to pretend like the player has dramatically changed his game somehow.

Janmark, Brown, Henrique, Arvidsson and i guess J.Skinner supposedly all took discounts to be Oilers. It wasn't dumb to let go of Broberg+Holloway for 6.5M.
Neither had accomplished much at NHL.

Podkolzin deserves 3M per based on his play of late but Oilers wouldn't be offering him that.

All the team would have needed to do to ice the exact same roster they did to start the regular season with Holloway instead of Podkolzin is swap Philp in for Ryan (which they should have done either way).

The Oilers chose to accrue cap space instead of match. They had the room to get it done.

And they made the right choice.

Accrued cap space and good vibe in the locker room. Nurse hit on Broberg and McDavid hit on Holloway. You can tell the boys took it personal

Kind of need to find out what they do at the deadline before we make that proclamation don’t we?

Player for player, only the blindest of homers would suggest Holloway wouldn’t have been an absolute massive upgrade over Podkolzin. Podkolzin has done an admirable job, but he’s completely miscast in a top 6 role.

He's not though, his work ethic, attention to detail and trustworthiness has really helped Draisaitl not have to worry about looking after other people's responsibility on the ice.

It would be great if he produced more, but he's done well. He's a better 2-way player that Holloway and it's not close.

We've seen Holloway with either McDavid and Drai. He didn't produce. He's finding his game in St. Louis and that's good for him. Pods understands his role and doing a good job for what's he's paid. The offense could come later.
