Yikes. Good digging. I said it before, but Bowman being away from the NHL so long really hurt his mental database of current player ability and goings on. He seems to be operating on years-old information. (See: Klingberg, John)
Now, the safety net for that would be this kind of stuff normally being shared between friendly colleagues, but there again the Chicago scandal made him a pariah and put a stain on the GM community as a whole. I highly doubt he has many strong relationships with other teams.
When you put those two things together, I would bet money Bowman had no idea any of that stuff happened, and he only went off some nice stats that were juiced by an early season heater. This is to say nothing of the bizarre fit that is yet another lefty, and yet another defensively suspect defenseman. Strange business all the way around when there were a dozen other ways to actually help our blueline.
