He'd be absolutely perfect if he was making like $3M--so basically, his salary without the retention on Spooner.

I don't associate retention with Strome. Retention goes into the same line / box in the roster's salary structure where Girardi's buyout goes.

I feel like he's a major upgrade from Spooner. Even if he isn't scoring, he's noticeable in his role.

He’s better defensively. And he knocked someone down in one of the past two games, which Spooner would go out of his way to avoid. And, he’s been much more productive than Spooner was to start the season.

Spooner is one of those classic, "What is his role in the NHL?" type of players.

He hasn't shown an ability to bring enough consistent offense to a top-six role, and he doesn't really bring any of the attributes you'd like to see in a bottom six player.

So you're left with a guy who scores in streaks, isn't a defensive wiz, doesn't bring a physical game, and really doesn't seem to have a meaningful impact on the game.

Oh he has an impact on the game, just in the wrong direction.

And while talented, he doesn't bring enough offense to justify what a drag he is on shots/chances.

To be fair, last year he did. His p/60 was like top ten in the league I think. But he hasn't done that any other year.

Spooner seems like exactly the type of guy who would go over to Europe and put up some very nice numbers.

He would be a legit first liner there and nobody would care about his negative impacts.

His negative impacts would also be lessened against that level of competition.

Strome is such a nothingburger. He's like Jesper Fast, if JF was somehow chosen top5 in an NHL entry draft.

Spooner is like Pirri except he's a disher instead of a finisher. Guys who can score but aren't consistent enough overall players at even strength to really be full timers in the league.

I guess NYR won the trade, in the long haul it will be an irrelevant, forgotten trade that has no impact on either club longer term as both teams work back to contention. Worth a shot to try and shake things up for both clubs but irrelevant in the end.

Fast is a valuable bottom-6 piece, so I don't quite get how that's a knock against Strome. Also, what does it matter to us where he was drafted? We traded a player with no NHL role for a player that can fill a NHL role. In fact, your whole post just looks like an excuse to use the edgelord term "nothingburger." Ew.

I have no idea what this is is supposed to mean.

Fast is an adequate 4th liner sure, I guess Ryan strome could be as well....

Fast is probably one of the best bottom six guys out there right now IMHO. Strome hasn’t bothered me one bit. It’s not like we traded for him to step up and be the pick he was drafted at he just fits our roster better at this time. I thought it was a good trade for us

Eh, I don't know if this assessment even applies here. The Rangers got a player for the role that Spooner couldn't do. Doesn't mean that Strome is a better, more talented player than Spooner.

How is Strome doing in his new home? On a scale of 1 to 10 where would you rank your happiness with this trade?

with the value of the trade, I'd give it a solid 9/10.
At $4M and the fact we had to salvage the Spooner situation, this isn't an all world steal or anything but can't really complain about a productive smart player pulling his weight.

1-1-2 for Spooner in 16 GP with NYR this season
2-1-3 for Spooner in 23 GP with EDM

1-1-2 for Strome in 18 GP with EDM this season
6-5-11 for Strome in 26GP with NYR this season
