Feel kind of bad for Spoondoggy right now. Dude has already been a part of 2 brutal losses in Edmonton. First game is a rough Battle of Alberta. First game is a particularly violent Battle of Alberta.
Strome had 4 5v5 goals against his whole season in Edmonton, 18 games. Spooner already at 4... 2 games in.

How has Strome looked? How does he rank defensively amongst your forwards?

I've always hated Spooner's style of play and, as expected, he has been horrible for the Oilers.

What I would say about Strome is that he's an NHL bottom 6 player.

That doesn't sound like much, but we really didn't have many of those when we made the trade.

I don't see him being part of the finished product, but he's been fine.

He’s a nice player. He may even have a little chemistry with Howden and Fast. He had a goal and another amazing chance in the Habs match. He seems actually to be a lot like Fast but maybe a little better offensively.

I really like him. Maybe more than most. He is a really solid bottom line player and I think has untapped offensive potential.

I'm rather impressed by how quickly he has shown results. I am excited to see how he can adapt long-term.

Spooner is awful. Frankly, one of my most disliked players to ever play for the Rangers. I honestly can hardly remember someone being so invisible unless he is scoring. I literally had no idea he was even playing in some games. Just benching him made me happy. The mere fact that we received a young contributing player in return is amazing to me.

I expected to be disappointed with Strome when the trade initially happened but Spooner simply wasn't doing well here either so it was sort of a wash.

Since the trade I find myself looking more for the weaknesses in Strome's game and have been pleasantly surprised that he is far more well rounded then I initially though. He's been good, he's playing good hockey and most importantly he is engaged. He makes his presence known. Maybe it's the system? But for NY #16 has been ok.

I feel like when I watched him in the past he wasn't a factor. I don't get that feeling now. It's still early yet.

I look at it this way, we converted a throw-in, from the Nash deal,
into a useful young depth guy, who Quinn has already used in a variety of situations.

Besides, it will be fine if Strome's value increases some with this usage,
and, in Jan/Feb, he is flipped to a contender, or bubble team, for pick(s) or younger prospect(s)

Yeah I feel the same way.

Overall though, the caphit+retention is high for what he brings. 4m per. Not that it matters much for us now, but it kind of annoys me in relation to the penny pinching we are seing with Hayes.

It’s so easy to waste cap space on players that aren’t worth it. And it’s very hard to find players who actually can contribute and make a difference on the ice. Stralsy was an example of that and Hayes is another.

I am not complaining if Gorts swings Hayes for a good return. But it should be a good return.

He's been a good player and when this team is back to full personnel (if that ever happens) he'll give the top 6 guys a nice break from PKing too much.

He keeps this play up and he's the perfect trade chip (with salary retained) to a playoff contender who is looking to beef up their bottom six.

Strome has been more noticeable in the few games here than Spooner was in the first 20. Spooner just really didn't fit here

He's decently strong on the puck--but a lot better than Spooner was. We generally need more guys who are stronger on the puck. This team still plays very finesse to succeed long term.
