After watching Katz roll up the Brinks truck for Draisaitl ($112m) and knowing that Bouchard will get at least $10m x 8 ($80m) and McDavid will get at least $16m x 8 ($128m),
RNH has got to be feeling like a real chump for accepting a team friendly deal of $5.125m x 8 ($41m).

This has got to be a mistake by the Oilers. He's a good player, yes, but defensively he's been a disaster and you want more than just offense for 14 million.

This also means that McDavid should get paid like 20mil AAV.

This is one of those deals where Oilers fans are just as happy as rival fans about the deal.

I guess we will see who is right. I certainly don't think they can compete after this year with their top 3 players taking up so much salary.

But no way was Draisaitl ever staying at a discount to play in Edmonton.

Now youre spanning how many offseason?

The gap between RNH contract and McD is 2021 and 2026. And two of those contracts don't exist.

We all know that RNH took less to help the team knowing Draisaitl's and McDavid's contracts would be expiring and Oilers fans cheered him for it. Draisaitl on the other hand...

Again, Pittsburgh won twice (even worse the second time in 2017 because Letang's salary didn't even contribute at all to their Cup win) with a similar cap layout.

Top 3 forwards + top D-Man + a starting goalie

Crosby 8.7 + Malkin 9.5 + Letang 7.5 + Kessel 6.8 + MAF 5.75 = 53.5% of the cap (71.4 mill cap roof)

McDavid 16 + Draisaitl 14 + Bouchard 11 + Hyman 5.5 + Skinner 5(?) = 53% of projected 97 mill cap

97 may be a low cap projection too, the cap is rising like 4-5 million a year as is and that's without a new TV deal in Canada which is coming up. The price of all TV deals is going way up, the price of watching all live entertainment is up (see if movie tickets are the same price today as 10 years ago).

What they don't have is the luxury of Chiarelli and Holland signing some dumb contracts, so like another Lucic signing or Jack Campbell type signing is out of the question.
Both Sid & Geno took a lot less to keep their team competitive as they signed their extensions, their first one after the 1st cup. Because of that, it allowed the Penguins to keep adding better talent around Sid & Geno to win more cups, this whole market value thing, yeah sure, but the fact of the matter is Draisaitl could have also taken a little less and given his team a better shot at adding more talent so they can maybe win at least 1 in their career. Because the Oilers were already having cap issues before his extension and they lost 2 players because of it via offer-sheets, this next summer is going to make it even worse and this hope that so and so will sign for dirt cheap, hardly. Adam Henrique didn't really take a discount to stay there, at 3m he's at his market value for his age and production, Skinner is able to take less because of a buyout, Arvidsson is basically just trying to prove to the world he's not made of glass.

Basically hoping the cap hit looks better as the cap goes up, hopefully as much as you hope it does, isn't going to do much. Because Bouchard will get his massive pay day, McDavid will get his new contract that will likely go a couple past Draisaitl's cap hit and then Skinner will need his too, so that cap going up doesn't really offset anything at all.

And don't give me that "projected 97" bullshit, go by the current cap hit or at least what's been reported so far as the potential cap increase to 92, the NHL could also freeze it after that for a year before it goes up again.

Even MacKinnon took less so the Avs could have a better line-up, then he took his pay day after. If MacKinnon didn't do that, they wouldn't win the cup as it would have stopped them from signing and trading for certain players, even with the LTIR to Landeskog. This isn't rocket science, players literally talk about taking less to be competitive to maximize their window. Sid and Geno literally talked about it, so did Mack and others have as well.

You realize no other teams were allowed to talk to him lol
To take that massive cap hit at when he's turning 30 when it kicks in during that season is pretty rough, effectively just screwed their window no matter how much you lot want to explain it away.

When Sid & Geno took their first extensions after their ELC, they were 21 and 22, just made the finals and lost to the Red Wings, Sid had his 8.7m cap hit kick in the year of the first cup, Geno's was after at a similar cap hit. To take less allowed them to keep adding talent and structure things better. If for example when Sid was 26 and needed his next extension, he took 15-16% of the cap, Pens aren't winning the back 2 backs at all. SId would jump from 8.7m cap hit to either 9.6m or 10.28 and Malkin would as well, that'd be it for them, the 1 cup in 2009 and then trying to figure out cheap options to make things work.

I don't get why Draisaitl wouldn't just do a shorter deal at a better cap hit and stick it to the teams by giving the Oilers more room, then if McDavid did the same, say both doing 3yrs, they'd have a window to add as much as they can. It's not like they hadn't made their bank, McDavid is finishing up a 100m contract, Draisaitl is wrapping up his 56m one. Both are hitting 28 and 29 in the first few months of the season.

That window isn't as open as you lot think.

Totally agree!

Players should be able to terminate their contracts if they don’t like the location, coach, salary or basically don’t feel like the team is living up to what they thought they were getting when they signed.
Oh you, silly goose.

Draisaitl could have easily asked for 15 mil and the Oilers would've paid him

heck, any team would've paid him 15 million had he gotten to UFA

RNH has had a good head start on Draisaitl and McDavid .. if he was in a tier close to them the point totals would be similar right now considering the huge head start.

RNH has 150 less pts than Drai who was drafted 3 yrs later. Nuge took a 500k per discount perhaps but got the security of 8yrs. Not really a comparable to McDrai.

I'm sure he is ok with it considering he will have made 88 million in his career at the end of the contract and the multiple businesses he owns

Draisaitl's whole game is slowing down the play same as Joe Thornton did Thornton was top 4 in scoring turning 37 considering Drai is a better skater to start and a much better shot, Thornton was a better passer but Drai is elite at that as well

People yapping about McDavid getting 16 million so be it it's a 3.5 million raise to what he is getting

Actually good guy Draisaitl is helping them by monopolizing the cap space, going 'nuh uh i saw what you did for Nurse," keeping them smart, frugal, and adding cheap youth. 4d chess!

Mcdavid signed for 15.7% back in 2018 three full seasons after toews and Kane signed for 14.7% each

I imagine he’ll sign for a similar % again which at a 93m cap or whatever will be around 15m

I think everyone on that team knows that draisatl deserved some back pay

Hey at least you can be proud they made some serious coin and put up wild numbers without winning a cup when all is said and done.

Oilers going to have to lose couple good players if they want to keep their stars. They hard up against cap now couldn't afford young players in Broberg and Holloway.

Next 2 summers increases to Drai, McDavid, Bouchard, Skinner be around 18 million. Cap is 88 million now. I predict cap being 97 million in 2 years. Only 9 million increase. They will have to slash 9 million somewhere.

Oilers farm is weak. No good young cheap players coming along. Because they have traded many top picks recent years. This season is Oilers last hoorah.

LOL did you have dinner with Friedman? we DONT have any clue what Bouchard or McDavid will get we've had 36 pages of people bouncing that number around.

When Nuge made that signing, I bet if he had signed for 7-8 million per every non Oiler fan would be shitting on them for giving him that much.

When soft winger like William Nylander can get 11.5MM and drai outscores him by literally 126 points over the same amount of regular season games over the last 5 seasons.

95 mill is probably a very low estimate. People are forecasting a 4 mill rise for next summer alone (going up to 92 mill).

After that year the Canadian TV NHL rights contract is up, so it's highly improbable that the cap only goes up another 3 million that year.

I would agree that they are conservative numbers. Even the projected $92M for 25/26 could be low. I think $100M cap is coming faster than most realize.

Is it smart management to pay players based on hopeful revenue increases?

It's part of the business. You can't force any contract you want on the player and if you play low ball too much, you loose the player to free agency. Keeping fans in the seats is more important than what some fans think. Yes, these are billionaire owners but they are managing a business with high risks and rewards.

Drai got 15.2% of the cap starting 25/26. Rumors are the cap is $92M for that season but could be more. I think that is where they landed at. $92M-$95M cap and the contract is based on that. I don't think they looked past it in terms of what the cap would be in the 4th-8th years in this case.

Do you think all 11 of the QBs being paid higher than him deserves the salary than?
The alternative is for players down the lineup to make more, which is also a fine option, but not really based in reality. Or, the owners just keep more.

Cap % is much more important to look at vs. cap hit, especially for contracts signed years ago. If Draisaitl's cap % is why out of line compared to other top players, then that's a conversation to have.
