Its 14 mil 😅 i think he could have gone for 15 but left 8 mil on the table for McDavid. Bouchard will probably sign for 10 mil minimum, there is no way he would make less than Nurse who signed that contract couple of years ago. I see McDavid will sign for 15 mil and if he is feeling genorous he might match drai contract. So that will be about 48 mil minimum for 4 players assuming McDavid takes a discount or they could push to 50 mil combined. Thats more than 50% of cap gone.
The cap will likely be nearing 100M and will continue to increase. This isn't the flat cap covid era anymore.

Quinn Hughes, J.T. Miller, Thatcher Demko for Draisaitl and Nurse. You wouldn't do that deal?

I'm just trying to match salaries. I can't imagine VAN saying yes to this honestly.
Hell no, Drai is not worth 3 superstar players and one that is very young and won a Norris. Especially 14 mil Drai that is great on offense but terrible defensively. Hughes and Miller cap combined are similar to Drai.

Signings Nurse to a ridiculous deal doesn’t mean you don’t sign Drai to this very fair market extension.

The Oilers are going to have to work the margins hard going forward because of the Nurse mistake but I’m not sure why Nurse is even a topic of discussion in terms of whether or not you keep Draisatl. This is not a case of “the core hasn’t made it past the second round in half a decade so it needs to be blown up”. This core was a couple periods from the Cup.

Heres a better question, e.peterrsson + 3 1sts for draisaitl, does edmonton consider it?

I am glad they locked him up. Players like that are rare and special. Having him and likely McDavid for another 8-9 years is great for the franchise.

Too long, too much.

13M x 7 would’ve been a solid deal for both sides.

This one hurts the Oilers, it stretches them too much, can’t effectively round out their roster. Mcdavid will probably get 15M on his new deal, that’s a lot of dough between 2 players.

So in a couple of years it will be 50% of the cap. Not sure how Oilers will be anymore competitve than they were last year. They still dont have a good goalie or a good defense. Their window to being a cup favorite might have just closed this year. I thought they had their highest chances of winning a cup was last season when they went to the finals. Not sure they could come back to that point, reminds me of Canucks back in 2011.

Looks pretty good to me. About 40M left to round out the roster. Stay competitive and players will take discounts to play on this team.
OReilly was just drafted in 1st round. Akey in rd 2.
Savoie, Jarventie etc added for future depth options. Ekholm can be signed for cheap #5D option.
Defense needs work for sure but 2026 is long ways away.
I mean 2 years from now isn't that long? Stan Bowman has a lot of work to do if he wants this team to be like Boston or Detroit in their heyday where they make the playoffs every year.

McD guaranteed to make 15 mil since Drai set the benchmark at 14 mil. If I were McDavid, i would ask for 16 mil since McDavid is worth at least 2 mil more than Drai imo and he should make max as the best player in the league

I mean, who wouldn't want to trade for a goalie who's perpetually on the IR?
So you forgot Norris winner Hughes and 100 point number 1 center Miller. And we are supposed to ignore Nurse with the worst contract thrown in the deal 🤣
That Nurse contract would completely destroy the value of Drai in a deal since you will get 0 defense for 28 million.

Crazy how we were talking about reaching 10 million a few years back and now we’re approaching 15M. Might be time to consider a max contract at 15M more money to be allocated to lesser skilled players. Let everyone eat lol, similar to how NBA has max contracts.

I mean the Canucks won the division in 2012 and 2013.... they just became epic playoff choke artists after 2011 when they got their souls crushed. We'll be fine

No way they can have quality depth for only 40 mil. How will they sign 18 players for 40 million? Assuming Nurse, Drai, McDavid and Bouchard account for the rest. The rising cap also means depth players want to make more not less. They would not be able to even get a Deharnais type of depth unless they will round out the roster with defensemen like Stilman or Friedman.

How ironic, every one laughed and said Draisaitl was gone right after this contract expired lolol. Now that he has signed and for 8 years at that the narrative changes and now its to much money and how can the oilers compete now. Next chance hf never change
Is that why most people are saying that it's a fair deal and would pay more in free agency?

nice Oilers, I think Drai extending makes McDavid extend/ if Drai left I thought for sure McDavid would too but now I dunno
we all knew he would be the next highest paid player though
Its a 2 edge sword type of situation. Its great and it means McDavid will probably sign and they will get to keep their star players. But on the other hand, they will beed to sacrifice quality depth because they are too top heavy. Its the same blueprint as Toronto Maple Leafs. 2 very highly paid centers, and couple of highly paid wingers, one offensive dman that will get paid similar to Reilly and no good goalie or defensive depth. Not sure its a reciepe for success. Although ot was a situation where they had to sign Drai and need to sign McDavid but it makes their team weaker at the same time because of losing depth they need to reach the finals

Tough to say but I can't imagine it would be much more than what he got, if at all. I don't think he took less for the team but I could be wrong.
panarin signed for 11.6 when the cap was 81.5 (14.2%)

Next season when Drai was scheduled to be a ufa, the cap will be about 93m

That 14.2% would be about 13.2

Is a soon to be 30 year old draisatl more or less valuable than a soon to be 28 year old panarin?
