It's a win for the Oilers just getting him signed. The bigger problem is, this basically means the current cup window is this upcoming season. Because as Bouchard and McDavid get paid as well, the Oilers simply aren't going to have the space for proper depth, especially given how badly they draft and develop.

Great player................huge deal.
McD will get ??? 15M-16M.....................going to be hard to build a team to win it all.
Happy for the player and the team, but wow.

Already losing players to unmatchable offersheets and purging players out to make room

Going to be rough paying 2 players 30 million dollars as they close in on the age of 30

It is a justified and easy cup-or-bust signing for Edmonton to make. They can't risk him walking if they want to keep McDavid and/or make another run, and they are in a corner negotiation-wise where the only option is to give up a blank check. For Draisaitl it is a pretty easy decision. You stick with what works for you, secure your future as the highest-paid player in the league, and don't risk a change of scenery where you become the one and only most counted on guy where you may or may not be able to continue production to lead a team to a championship.

Of course, McDavid gets the easiest blank check next, assuming he doesn't have a change of heart this year and bolts for another contender, but after he commits his future to Edmonton then they will have ~$40M/per year slotted to three players for the long term. They are going to need to find some really amazing complimentary pieces to get that to work.

Good deal for Oilers and Leon.

Can they fit Bouchard now?
They should be able to without much issue. There is a lot of talk about the Oilers’ cap issues but they’re not very different from other contending teams in terms of things being tight. Holloway and Broberg gone clears a lot of uncertainty too.

This is speculation but if anyone would take a pay cut, it’s McDavid. He’s been paid well his entire career while Drai was severely unpaid for the last few years.

I love this narrative, as if anyone knows what the cap will be in 2 or 3 years from now

I don't want to know.
In the last 5 years he is top 2 in regular season points and top 3 in playoffs.
It would have been a downgrade regardless.
Quinn Hughes, J.T. Miller, Thatcher Demko for Draisaitl and Nurse. You wouldn't do that deal?

I'm just trying to match salaries. I can't imagine VAN saying yes to this honestly.

So you're saying the Oilers best chance to win is with Leon on a bargain contract well below market value the year after they made G7 of the finals? What a revelation

It's likely nearing 100M lol

This usually comes from teams fans' that don't have two players of that quality.

Considering that no one, even Oilers fans don't think that Nurse is worth that contract, it isn't a fair comparison.
