I dont get the fans complaining this deal was a no brainer for Edmonton hes a top 3 player in the world we all knew he was gonna get paid no big difference between 13.5 and 14 atleast Oilers get Drai locked up for all his prime

No discount but FMV. That Nurse contract is such a huge boat anchor that they will need to save money elsewhere. Not many young players in the pipeline and they should be trading their first round picks and going all in the next two years. After 2 years it’s going to be a lot tougher to win imo as they’ve lost the advantage of having two superstars on sweetheart deals and still have that Nurse boat anchor.

They need to hit on a few later round draft picks to fill out some depth.

I'd venture to guess there will be a constant flow of cup chasing vets coming in.

I think the struggle is always going to be filling out the rest of the top 4 of the defense and having a bottom 6 that is productive.
There will be regular influx of 'Parayko to Oilers' proposals here til the bolded is fulfilled. ;)

Soooo two year window or so? I mean stranger things have happened but three players making well over 10 million per winning the cup?

Certainly no discount, the cap % at the time of the signing is higher than any player I could find.

But it's in the 15%'s and that's what all these superstars are getting, so it's a fair deal.
For sure there was talk after the cup final about everyone taking less, but if that is true we are taking less aav of like 500k, not millions. As an Oiler fan I do think this creates a few hard years as we wait for the cap to grow. So we have our best cup chance this year, a decent one next year, and then some tough times, and then this interesting elder year stretch where we get a couple more cracks at it.

To me, the big factor is the surrounding cast. How much more can we squeeze out of Nuge, Hyman, Kane? Can Bowman find a new crop? We might depend on finding guys who will take less to be here

At least they have some good young players in Holloway and Broberg

They have added guys like Jarventie, Savoie, Emberson fairly recently and managed to draft in first round this year as well. Thing to note is that they dont really need any of these guys to develop into a top 6 player but only middle 6 forward\ bottom pairing D.

edit: Podkolzin was an add as well

Not a discount. Not overpayment. Fair market value. Exactly where people should've expected him to land.

If I was an Oilers fan, I don't give a shit about the AAV today, just celebrate signing a top-3 forward long term. And would be relieved because surely this indicates that McDavid has every intention of staying as well.

It's definitely a good day to be an Oiler fan.

I do think the points being made about how high cap hits don't have a lot of Cup success are valid. Nobody has ever won with 2 players taking up close to 30% of the cap. That also doesn't mean that nobody ever will either. David Staples had a good podcast about this.

I also agree with the ones pointing out that Darnell Nurse's contract is the major roadblock. Well not his contract but his play/value ratio from it. If the Oilers never win a cup I think this contract will be the main culprit.

Either way having McDavid and Draisitl is fun as hell to watch and cup or no cup I am glad I am fortunate enough to watch and cheer for them.

Their prospect pool is still rated really low though. One of the worst. It’s going to be an issue after two years. But that’s an issue for down the road.

Draisaitl is not number 2

LOL
Whether in your subjective opinion he is specifically number 2 or not is completely irrelevant; he is clearly in the highest echelon of elite talent in the league.

I always find it so bizarre when people feel the need to laugh at someone for making a reasonable statement just because it doesn't fit with the narrative in their heads.

Oilers ensuring they don't fall below the cap floor anytime soon. Great strategy :sarcasm:
