What Proven NHL D did they move out to sign him? They traded Cody Ceci, a guy being paid more than Jeff Skinner, and got a defenseman they like better in return. They lost Broberg to an offer sheet, He was not a proven NHL defenseman, he has played less than 100 NHL games and was a healthy scratch in 60% of the Oilers playoff games and they could have still matched his deal if they wanted to.
We weren't going to pay Broberg 4.5m based on potential when the teams in a contention window. We had to walk away at that point. Ekholm is 34. Losing a young LD in Broberg is a big loss moving forward, especially when it wouldn't have been with the contract the Blues signed him too. He'd be a great value for us at 1.8m (This is a reported amount it was going to take to sign him, I've yet to see disproven) The team only offered 1.1m. The team messed up not signing their RFAs.
Yes, Ceci routinely got crapped on but Ceci and Desharnais were both pieces of an excellent PK that's been overlooked. Ceci played 20+ mins a night and the replacement player in Emberson is playing 14 mins a night and getting caved in. Desharnais played more mins a game than any of Stecher, Emberson, Dermott and Brown. Kulak's mins are way up and Ekholm and Bouchard are up about 2mins a game. Now Nurse and his 20 mins a night are out and all we're doing is running our few good D into the ground. The goaltending isn't doing this group any favours either.
The Oilers RD needed an upgrade on Ceci. We got a downgrade on Ceci. Would you agree with these statements or disagree?
The team didn't need another offensive forward with a questionable 2way game. We needed Holloway on a cheap contract in his spot. I could have been a tad clearer. I didn't want Skinner. Wanted Broberg and Holloway signed (not matched) and Ceci traded as they did. I just wanted an upgrade in his place. 2RD is where the team should have been looking to allocate their available cap space. They didn't.
