Confirmed Signing with Link: [EDM] F Jason Dickinson signs extension with the Oilers (5 years, $4M AAV)

The term doesn't really matter when their window to win is closing within the next couple years.
You make it sound like they are signing Kucherov or McKinnon. It's Dickenson, a nothing player who will get paid 4 mil and people here justifying the price because there is not many UFAs this summer which is pretty dumb. They should have save that 4 mil and traded a player and assets for a top 6 forward. Henrique would have been the 3rd line center but the top 6 player that would have been obtained via a trade would have much more impact that Dickenson on the 3rd line. Signing these 4th liners for long term deals will look very bad both long term and in the near future.

Somewhere, somehow, Jim Benning feels vindicated

But he shouldnt. This is a laughable contract that almost makes me feel sorry for the Oilers

Guys like Dickinson or Frederic are available on waivers each year. They could have taken their nearly 8 million combined cap hit and added a pretty good forward or goaltender.
Yah, just crazy they paid 4 mil for 5 years, for a guy that you could replace for 1-2 mil. Dickinson is a dime a dozen, an above replacement level player. #12 Forward.

no wonder why McDavid will want out

Dickinson and Frederic signed for 7.85 combined next season is f***ing crazy lol I if I performed like Stan Bowman at my job for a month I'm getting fired.

f*** our management is a joke.

Has our management ever once tested whether an agent would flinch? We cave in worse than an abandoned mine.

It’s not that I don’t like Dickinsonson, good defensively, strong on the puck, but maybe 2.5 per is his max. Poor man 3C/strong 4C. Not 5 x 4 material.

McDavid is good as gone after this year. Sure hope it’s for 2030 futures or later do the current group has zero f***ing fingerprints on that rebuild.

PS: f*** Daryl Katz. Hopefully once his HGH kid takes over we find evidence he gave him some pills that erase the concept of nostalgia from memory so we no longer hire dinosaurs that won shit 20 years ago thinking they’re still relevant.

You have to feel bad for McDavid. Gives a team friendly deal and Bowman spends the savings on Frederic, Jarry and Dickinson.

Frederic was signed before the McDavid extension. You have to imagine Mcdavid was aware of that contract.

I know these Oilers topics mean a lot to you, being a Canucks fan and all. 🙄 But really, it is OK to take your time and try to get your facts straight before posting.

Remember when the player was a cap dump by Vancouver to Chicago. Had to include a second to move him. Can't imagine that Dickenson ever imagined he be getting this kind of money and term a couple of years ago.

Kind of deal Edmonton had to make to shore up the bottom end of their line up. However, I'm not sure Dickenson moves the needle that much for the Oilers in terms of winning the Cup. Get into the grind of the playoffs and I'm not sure how well Dickenson plays through that.

Why couldn't he imagine it?

Dickenson was already on a 3y x $4.25 million contract a couple of years ago.

It's exactly similar to how Benning operated. Signing a bunch of useless washed up 4th liners to 3 or 4 million contracts which he ended up either buying out or trading them with draft picks attached to it.

I don't think the two players are remotely comparable. Dickinson plays the game the right way, and contributes even when not scoring. Frederic forgets to show up.
Blueger who is even a better player operates similarly but Canuck didn't sign him to a 5 million 5 year contract. Overpaying you bottom 6 forward isn't a recipe for success.

It kind of made sense for Chicago to keep him and pay well since he was a stabilizing vet during a rebuild. Makes zero sense for EDM who should be in win now mode

Yeah Chicago overpaid because they had cap space, weren't competing and needed a vet to protect their players and shelter their minutes. It doesn't make sense for a cap strapped Edmonton looking to compete

Blueger being a better player is very debatable.

Cheaping out on depth players also isn't a recipe for success. The Oilers need to add to their forward depth, not lose it. The Oilers also need strong defensive forwards like Dickinson. I agree though that it might be a small overpay. But lets wait until day 1 of free agency to see if that is true. With hardly any decent centers hitting free agency, overpaying might have been the only real option for the Oilers.

This contract will age like milk, but if there isn't a no trade clause, and its only $4M, its not a severe overpay for a shutdown 3C.

IDK what the big deal is about 5 years. It was probably needed to keep the AAV down and if the Oilers win this year or next, everyone is happy. If they don't, it's all over anyway and the cap won't be much of a concern.

Keeping the AAV down this year and next might help them acquire someone else at the TDL. Plus he's a great defender and a solid pro.
For starters, $4 million a year is already a high salary for what Dickinson brings. So if the 5 years is used to "bring the AAV down" then I shudder to think what Bowman would have paid him on a 2 or 3 year deal.

Dickinson is a 4th line forward. And honestly he's not even a high end one. You don't need to be paying a player like that $4 million per year for 5 years when you can get a veteran like that for half the price and half the term.
