I watched the game on delay and couldn't participate in the thread tonight.
Here are my observations:
-SERGEI f***ING BOBROVSKY. It is safe to say that, for whatever reason, Bob rises to the occasion come playoff time. This has been a magical run for him. The best sequence of his career as a Panther. The reason why we are advancing to the Conference Finals is because Sergei Bobrovsky outplayed the Leafs goalies, both Samsonov and Woll. He was sensational. I don't even care about the sharp angle goal #2 tonight. This guy shut the door when called upon and carried the team. In an era where excellent goaltending is difficult to come by, Bob is right now living up to his contract.
-I thought Bennett and Tkachuk both had somewhat quiet games and overall were somewhat quiet in the series, but they were still effective along the boards and Bennett rattled off several big hits. The great thing about them is, even if they aren't scoring much, they're still imposing their will on the opponent.
-Sam Reinhart was my MVP up front for the Panthers. He made plays every time he touched the puck. I really liked the poise and hockey IQ from Anton Lundell in this series as well. He was the prototypical defensively responsible third line center for us.
-The Barkov/Verhaeghe/Duclair line generated some good chances tonight. Barkov was a little sleepy at times but seemed to pick things up toward the end of regulation and in OT. Duclair had a gorgeous pass to Verhaeghe on goal 2.
-Aaron Ekblad was a ROCK on defense. There was a particular sequence where the Leafs had the puck all alone in the slot with a prime scoring chance and he came up huge with a big block. That's the kind of sacrificial play that wins you playoff games.
-Forsling and Montour are both so important for our club. They are elite at moving the puck and skating with it.
-How about NICK COUSINS!? He fits like a glove on the second line. Major credit to Paul Maurice for trying him there.
-The Leafs really tightened up defensively in games 4 and 5. Credit to them: They played a more physical brand of hockey and made it much more difficult to generate anything. They had the puck a lot in the last few games and did not allow the Panthers much at all. Offense was hard to come by for us - it came down to our goalie being better than theirs.
-OVERALL: We were the more opportunistic team. Our powerplay delivered when it needed to. We had better goaltending. At times tonight, it looked like we were hanging by a thread. It was a "bend but don't break" type of game for large portions of the second and third - but we hung on. I cannot express enough just how marvelous Sergei Bobrovsky has been in these playoffs and especially in this series. I have said some really harsh things about him over the years during his down points, and I did not think he had this type of goaltending in him anymore. I was wrong.
I'm overjoyed for this franchise and our fans. I've sat through a lot of misery over the years. There was a time when I thought we were the worst run organization in professional sports. I felt like we had no hope and would be perpetual losers. To go from a laughing stock to the Conference Finals feels extra sweet.
Last of all, I have to credit Bill Zito for what he has done for this franchise. Nearly all of his additions have been massive homeruns for this team. I questioned his offseason moves when it looked like we were going to miss the playoffs, but Zito has proven that the team he assembled even in what was supposed to be a "down" year was designed to succeed in the playoffs. He has been vindicated.
I think there's a lot of gas left in our tank. Yeah, Carolina is a tough opponent coming up next: But so were Boston and Toronto. Anything can happen.
