And not for nothing but another difference between the last series and this one (besides the fact this team is just better and is actually...a team rather than a collection), is we just don't have anyone you can count on to stop the puck right now. When Vitek got blown up against the Rangers there was always the possibility Schmid could step in. Now both guys have been blown up in the first two games.

Though I do see them playing Blackwood at some point I don't think they'd start him right off in Game 3 since he hasn't even played in weeks, if anything they'd probably make him the backup to Schmid and if he gets blown up again, then Blackwood will get the relief-start next game opportunity.

I don't buy this. Schmid has been under siege. This series hasn't been a goalie issue.

Lindy needs to put his big boy pants on and get better matchups on home ice to open things up.
It’s frustrating right now but the reality is this team is one year removed from picking second overall. It’s still a work in progress. They learned something about the pressure of playing your rival in round one and now they are learning about the level of determination and cohesion and team play they have to match to win. This is valuable experience and they can spend all next season working on this. Some of this shows the roster still needs to change and some of it is Hughes Hischier Bratt figuring out how to play when they are getting held and stocked constantly. Hischier started to figure it out a little when he finally smashed Kotkaniemi against the boards. He should do that every single shift. That’s how you win in the playoffs if the refs aren’t going to call the holding interference stockwork and subtle cheap shots. I have faith they will figure it out.

He also got pulled against the Rangers only to get a shutout right after.

He very much seems like a “one game at a time” goalie.

Great post, once again!

I’m sure there has been.

And I bet it happened not too terribly long ago.

I thought it happened to the 2014 Kings but it didn’t.

They were down 3-0 to San Jose and beat them in round one that year. For some reason I thought they went down 2-0 to Anaheim, but they didn’t. They were up 2-0 and then lost the next 3 straight before winning 2 elimination games in a row to win the series.

I went back to the 2010 playoffs and haven't seen anything yet.

I get that he's the 99 point shiny 1st overall player and all but how this version of Hughes escapes criticism relative to Bratt is something. Literally doing the exact same things as far as mistakes go, but you know...one's the golden boy.

But ultimately, none of these guys have shown up the way they should be and certainly not relative to any of the other "elite" forwards remaining in the playoffs (who are all older, to be fair...).
One guy seems to be trying to find ways to create space. The other spins to the half-board and flips a backhander. But the stats!

Hard disagree but he wears the C so he can be a bigger scapegoat.
We've had two straight games of the fourth line being the only good line and the D being awful...everyone besides them can be a scapegoat right now and it'd be deserved. And it's been longer than that when it comes to Nico's missing offensive production and a few of our other 'big scorers'.

The lack of compete by the whole team in too many of these games bugs my ass too, it did against the Rangers in the first two games as well but hey they got away with it there. Let's see them get away with it again against a better team now.

You'd like him not to get beat shortside on goal #2, or give away the puck maniac-Roy style on goal #4
I thought goal 1 was bad through his arm and goal 2 was borderline. There’s not a great enough camera angle for me to tell if that went over his shoulder from close range or if that was through his arm and the post. If that was through his arm and the post then that’s a save he should have made.

And by goal 4 he was just a mess and had come unhinged with that, like you said, manic Roy style poke check attempt (I think that’s why he was trying to do) that turned into a giveaway and a complete fire drill.

I thought he looked worse tonight than he did in game 1. And the pull in game 1 was also premature.

Vitek has also inspired no confidence in the last two relief appearances. He gave up a poor one off his glove in relief in game 1 and that breakaway goal was shot from distance and went off his glove.

Some of it is experience level in this sort of game but there is some level of systemic issue which isn’t going to change easily. NJ has three lines that play a certain way and one line that plays the way the Canes play and that line is successful compared to the other lines. The trick would seem to be getting the skilled players to play that styl as well. At some point guys will stop flubbing passes and shots which will help a lot as well.

I wanted to ding him on 1 at first since it was at an angle - but it was on the PP, and he did have all day to pick the far corner and hit it.

The game really turned in the second half of period one with big hits on Graves and Hischier. We have too few players that really play physical. No wonder that it's just the fourth line that does something in these two games. It's either the rest of the team is willing to step up or this will be over in four games.
