They weren't pretty in the 1st period. They gassed themselves.

I have no problem with the pass Fox made in OT. It was a tap-in goal. Strome is in an inbred onion.
Was ready to jump on Fox for a bad pass but replay showed he had no shot there and was thinking Strome would open up for the shot... but he didn't.

Andrew Copp is a career 52% on faceoffs maybe play him at center?

The Rangers and the Jets have had him in house and not used him at center. I am not sure he is a center. I like Copp but I’m not re-signing him if they aren’t sure he is a center.

Strome couldn't find the defensive zone on a map, Chytil has won seven faceoffs in his career, and Rooney sucks at everything.

The Rangers saying "we're not sure he's a center" is like Keith Richards saying "I'm not sure that should go up my nose."

They can shoot. Fox was proof. Instead they pass it up, thinking there's a better opportunity if they make another pass, then it'll be a tip in or a slam dunk into an open net. It doesn't need to be this way 99% of your plays. Playoff hockey needs to be as ugly as it is pretty. They demand pretty all the time.

Agreed. Pens were crashing the net like crazy in OT. We never made them sweat at all.

Maybe KK or Laf to Zbad line, Vatrano to 3rd line, Zbad line did squat all night it seemed. and Vatrano's cooled considerably.

Do they flip out some bottom 6 guys to get "fresh legs" in for G2? Hunt for Rooney?

Lindgren? He isn't a good enough player to be effective at less than 100%. God bless him, but he isn't McD who could play on a broken foot in 2015 and still contribute.

Rangers also need to quickly address getting beaten cleanly in Ozone faceoffs.

Remember last time we lost by one because of refs? We then dominated the next two games against them.

Yes, they came out like a house on fire, played with snarl. Then they stopped playing that way and reverted back to their more usual kind-of-passive type of game. I'm not saying they have to go 130 mph for 60 minutes. The second period was coming, and I and a few others in the GDT accurately predicted that their game would fall apart. For whatever reason, they can only play non-pretty and with aggression in stretches and in periods not named "second." It was like clockwork, like to the accuracy of the Japanese bullet train system. For whatever reason, carrying the puck became a calculus test, them moving the puck up the ice consisted of tapping the puck 15 feet ahead in the hopes it would find another Ranger stick blade nearby, repeat until it can reach the Pens blue line. Then they just lost ownership of the puck to the Pens completely and totally became allergic to the neutral zone. You'd unfocus your eyes and see blue dots on the left and the right but none in the middle. Gap control was horrible. No structure. Pens could've put out cots and slummed there and every play of theirs was a stretch pass from their back line.

Not only did they gas themselves physically in the first, but they also mentally exhausted themselves, to me. Interesting anecdote: during the TB-Tor game, it was mentioned that Tor went and sought out a sports psychiatrist and made that part of their operations team this year on the level with the skills coaches.

Just woke up from last night getting home at 130am...We played great for 1 period then there was tons of room from blue line to blue line. The Penns had easy exits and entry's ... we stopped fore checking...Sullivan probably out coached GG a bit adjusting to the early pressure. Biggest takeaway was Kaako. I have been raaging on him and he excelled...maybe he needs to be the man and play with youngsters.

It comes down to the same thing, shoot the puck and until guys start taking the bull by the horns and owning the moment it’s not going to change much

You can’t always be looking to make the next pass, somebody has to say to hell with this I’m scoring

Also whether you think faceoffs matter much in the grand scheme of things or not, you can’t be losing defensive zone draws that clean, they need to start tying up and having the wingers come in

Yep, said the same in my post above.

If Kakko doesn't get pushed from behind into DeSmith I think he's tucking that one in.

I didn't read every single post but 14 pages and not one mention of the seas parting for Fox to snipe a game winner and he passes to Strome who gets handcuffed.
Aside from the penalty call giving Pittsburgh their 5v3 and the overturned goal, that play by Fox was my most infuriating play of the night. So much time and space in the perfect spot to shoot and he forces a pass to a guy at a worse angle who is not in a shooting position. It was so f***ing stupid. Look Strome off and shoot the puck. It's goddamn NHL overtime, you're not going to globetrotter the puck into the net for a goal.

None of this is wrong. But I’m not giving a multi year extension out to a “center” who hasn’t regularly played center on either the Rangers or the Jets. That’s a dark ages move.

IMO, way bigger problem than perimeter play / refusal to shoot at times (agree might have been different if they didn't gas themselves on a 1st period bender which = inexperience) is their inability to break out cleanly and transition with speed.

Hate to say it but credit Sullivan and the Pens for that. They knew the NYR can't skate it out, played the counterattack game perfectly. Shades of how the Islanders play the NYR.

I wouldn't move a thing with the forward lines. Not with the Kid Line being probably the best line so far. Only adjustment needed is attitude.

Woke up and feel worse than I did last night. Guess it the shock wore off. Maddening, maddening loss.

Forgot what it feels like when the Rangers are in the playoffs. Must be nice to be an Avs fan.
For now, yes it’s nice to be an Avs fan but our teams are in a marathon race that will be a war of attrition. That’s the POs. Buckle up.

Longtime Pens fan here. Just stopping in to offer my sincere apologies for last night. I feel very gross about the "win" because your guys got hosed by a really bad call. I can't see any reason to justify calling off that goal with 3 minutes left.

Edit: I would be livid if the circumstances were reversed.

I can’t like this and the post you were responding to enough, I was ready for him to snipe one home right in front and he passes it off, unreal

This globetrotter esque mentality needs to go, they had their chances to win this game and they continually deferred to someone else as if nobody on this team wants to be the man they’d rather be the man’s best friend who sets him up for the pretty play, fix this problem and things start looking a lot different
