Boston throwing the kitchen sink and still losing 5–1 somehow feels more promising than total domination by the Canes would have. Hopefully they've shot their bolt.

Hate to say, but no don't think so. Their top line wasn't very good. Obviously the Canes played a big part in that, and in fact Rod attributed that directly to Jordan Staal and that line. They were shutting them down.

However, I fully expect they will be crashing the net even harder in game 2 and working to get better matchups. The good news is, we'll likely clean up some of the issues we had as well.

Are alerts on the site acting differently for anyone else?

Used to tap and open a menu over a thread and tap off....now it takes me out of a thread to an alert menu?? :scratches head:
Yes, and it's annoying.

Also the feature is not working properly where you paint a part you want to quote from someone's post and then choose "Reply" from the small popup menu. The forum software quotes the whole post, also the unpainted portions.

The malfunction of both features seem somewhat similar, in that the forum software starts performing the wanted action but the rushes to do the other thing. Could be the same root cause.

@Buffaloed

Oh, and, I see hockey went good. Good.

Hurricanes PK is simply amazing. Did they have any good chances at all? Somehow our PK looks even more comfortable than 5 on 5 :D
They had a couple of good chances, yes. They had an .94 xGF for the game on the PP. canes had a 100% Corsi for during the 3rd period kill. Canes were outshot 3 to 6 on the PK. The PK definitely looked better after the 1st.

Our PK was dominant last night. That last one in the 3rd was downright clinical. If that is how we are gonna defend, Boston has their work cut out for them.

They came at us hard in the 1st and we weathered the storm. Raanta came up big but that's what you expect in the playoffs. After that initial push we settled in and pretty much controlled the flow the rest of the game except for a few spurts here or there. Biggest thing for us is that our offense broke out in Game 1. Do that again tomorrow and things get interesting going forward.

We had a 100% CF during the kill in the 3rd. Hilarious.

It was a close game at 2-1 and Hall hits the post … and maybe a minute or two later, Teuvo finished that 2 on 1 for the 3-1 lead.

Those are the things that happen to the winning team. Have to keep pushing. No letup.

I mean thems the bounces. We've been on the other side of that before and we know better than anyone that it doesn't matter if its a post or a pad, you're still getting frustrated as a shooter.

One thing I did notice last night. Boston wasn't crashing the net. They really never set someone up to screen their shots, and while Raanta did make some phenomenal saves, most of the time he was saving pretty routine stuff. Now, I don't know if that's a credit to our physicality making them not want to fight those battles or just because they don't have anyone who can do that anymore, but that was nice to see. Keep that up tomorrow and we should be fine.

On the other side of the ice... Different story, we scored 2 bang bang goals at the end of the 2nd each with 2 Canes screening Ullmark. The first one Jarvis gets a tip and the other Nino finds a gap. 2 fast break goals later and we cruise to a pretty comfortable win.

My biggest worry going into this series was whether or not we would be able to regain our scoring form. Raanta is good enough to get us a series win, especially with our defense, but we needed to be able to get pucks in net. Well, last night we did that, and did it while playing the kind of defense you expect them to play. There really isn't anything to take away from this game that wasn't a positive. It was very reminiscent of every game we've already played against that team this year.

I agree with this outside of our defense. It still doesn't give me the warm fuzzies. I think Skjei turned the puck over on every shift during the first period, and all season long I have had the Benny Hill theme playing when Cole and Smith hit the ice. Smith really embarrassed himself in the third, and Cole continues to take Penalties. We were extremely lucky to leave the game tied after the first. If the Bruins scored it could have been a very different game.

It wasn't perfect but the defense recovered and neutralized its own mistakes outside of the 1st before we settled in.

As for Smith, the other option is Bear who is also prone to the exact same kind of mental screwups. Its part of the risk you take with either of them on the ice. At the end of the day, when those mistakes happened, we cleaned them up, and that's all you can really ask for. We're not going to be perfect in any game, so do what you can to mitigate disaster when things go sideways, and there are very few teams better at neutralizing their own screwups than the Canes.

Smith and Cole both saved goals that had trickled past Raanta, most notably the last one where Cole dove and saved it with his glove. Both guaranteed goals if not for them.
