Dynasty Building XXXVII: Improving On A Cup Winning Team

I think the only reason we'd move Nikishin is because we realize he'd have more value as a trade piece than he would playing 3rd pairing or on his offside for us. And since we have guys like CAL who can play the 3rd pairing and not look out of place, Nikishin becomes movable

But moving him for a defenseman to create the same issue, except it'll be Slavin or Miller playing that 3rd pairing/offside, doesn't make sense.

I still maintain we're putting feelers out there because someone was dumb enough to give a top 5 pick for Byram and we're like "Well, if teams are going to overpay for young defenseman..."
While I agree with what you said from my personal viewpoint, I'm not sure the Canes front office views it that way. Dundon said from day 1 that it's his job to find players better than what we have and it's the players job to make that hard for him. Tulsky has echoed the same sentiments that they are always looking to upgrade, even though it's a lot harder now that they are so good and won the cup.

If the Canes front office can get an elite player like Werenski, I think they do it and will figure out the fit. Same goes for forwards. They've shown they aren't afraid to stick guys like Ehlers and Jarvis on the "3rd" line with Staal and make it work.

I'm not sure if the smoke around Nikishin is just BS, or as you said, the Canes seeing what teams might offer, or legit because of fit/contract etc....Just commenting on how I think the front office operates.

I’m not convinced we’re even the ones putting feelers out there. I imagine other teams are calling about him and we are listening in case some offer does blow us away. But I highly doubt we’re shopping him or actively calling teams about him.

You know, @bleedgreen got the reputation for responding to the "Bat Signal" when someone mentioned Francis...are you trying to also get the same reputation for responding to every Nikishin trade discussion?

I could see us trading Nikishin as part of a package for Werenski.

Nikishin, Nadeau, 2x 2027 1 rd picks.

Outside of that I could see Larkin or Helle being a target.

Helle is a bit too old and costs too much for my tastes, plus has that aura around not stepping up during the playoffs. I’m also not sure if he is the type of goaltender that in excel without seeing a lot of rubber and good at stoping high danger shots… can someone here fill me in?

I think a wrinkle in this will be Slavin. He's 32. He's coming off a major injury. I can't imagine he'll be the Slavin we're familiar with for too many more years, even with his style of play being very close to immune from the typical downfalls of aging players.

Werenski makes sense if we're concerned about how Slavin will look after this year and a few years down the line.

Or if they want to win 2 or 3 cups in a row right now.

If only we'd been able to pry a d-man like KEY from the Rags to cover such a scenario lol . . . :sarcasm:

Not saying we shouldn't check out Werenski if he's available, can't have too good a Defense, but given what we've seen so far I'm thinking we've already got some pretty good Slavin insurance in house.

Maybe? I don't think Werenski would be the difference between multiple Cups or just the one we just won. Our D wasn't exactly our weak point. Now, if we acquired a forward or goalie of Werenski's caliber with Nikishin, then that might change things

I know we've all been bracing for some sticker shock as the cap keeps going up...but still.

And seeing how the Nemec/Byram deals and contracts are shaping up, man the 1st/2nd/Morrow for Key at $7.5m keeps looking better and better.
Makes us look so much smarter for locking everyone up long term at flatish cap rates over the years.

Where he set his single season high in points
In the playoffs and late season yes, most of the regular season he was bounced around the top 2 lines
