That is only 42m while signing everybody that is up for a new deal and I don't think I am low on any of them and I am probably high on a few. Of course Chevy won't re-sign all of them and some rookies will join the squad and maybe a TD acquisition gets re-signed or comes in with time still on his deal.

I know Lowry, KC and Perfetti are up the next season but Chevy has done a great job all things considered.
I think Iafallo will get more elsewhere(something like 4X4) and is likely gone which is a shame cause he's a great swiss army type player. I think maybe a bit low on Vilardi.

I agree about Alex but I just wanted to show that we could re-sign every player and still be under the cap. Just a great job by Chey and company...you know, not mentiong Chisholm and Kovs and Stempniak!

edit ... I also think Iafallo would play higher in the lineup on most other teams.

The rising cap is helping quite a bit, otherwise the Jets would have just $35M to sign 2 x Top 6 Forwards (Ehlers, Vilardi), 2 x Top 4 Defensemen (Pionk, Samberg), 3 x Middle 6 Forwards (Iafallo, Appleton and Namestnikov), and 3 theoretically easily replaceable 4th liners (Barron, Kupari, Ford). That gets a bit tight without bridging Samberg and/or Vilardi.

Agents are going to be doing the math though. I think whatever seems like a fair offer in our heads today has to get bumped up 10% or more with the cap projections. The PA is predicting about +8.5% next season, +8.9% the following year, and +9.1% the year after that, for a compounded increase of nearly 29% over this year's $88M cap ceiling.

Agents will be starting from the POV that $9M for Pionk or $10M for Ehlers on July 1 will be a steal in 3 years. Chevy may not be buying that opening gambit, but a lot of UFAs might like their chances on the open market.

Bridging might also be the preferred option for Vilardi and Samberg in light of those predicted cap increases. Why lock in for 8 years now when you can have your cake and eat it too with a bridge?

A bridge would bring them to unrestricted free agency.
We have the room for those two, extend them now.
I hope nobody tries to offer sheet either of them.

I meant Vilardi and Samberg may prefer to bridge - it would bring them to UFA right when the cap is projected to hit $113.5M. It's gonna be pretty tempting.

The Jets will have tons of room to match any offer sheets, so I wouldn't be too concerned. GMs don't generally poison-pill offer sheet each other.

I think the offer sheet compensations with a $95.5M cap will be about:

Up to $1,64M - No compensation
$1,64M to $2.48M - 1 x 3rd round pick
$2.48M to $4.97M - 1 x 2nd
$4.97M to $7.46M - 1 x 1st, 1 x 3rd
$7.46M to $9.94M - 1 x 1st, 1 x 2nd, 1 x 3rd
$9.94M to $12.43M - 2 x 1st, 1 x 2nd, 1 x 3rd
$12.43M+ - 4 x 1st

To really screw the Jets, another team could offer Samberg or Vilardi a 2 year, $9.93M AAV deal. If the Jets match, they're paying a lot of dough and walk those guys right to UFA. If the Jets don't match, you get Samberg or Vilardi for a 1st, 2nd and 3rd...but NHL GMs don't tend to go for that kind of cutthroat stuff.

I think Chibrikov should be in the nhl next year. One of Appleton, Barron or Iafallo could be moved for him to save a bit of cap if necessary. If Names moved on, perhaps Lambert too.

It could be, but what are you basing A and B on?
History as I remember it.

I'm not trying to diminish Samberg, he's been a real home run for us but saying Pionk makes his accomplishment somehow more remarkable is a stretch.

I think those two have great chemistry and that likely helps Samberg as well as Neal, though he was playing just fine without him.

Yet, A> Pionk was just fine without him this year, and B> Samberg has struggled with other partners.

Could it be that Pionk helps Samberg as well?
No he wasn't? the pairing with fleury was a big step down when Samberg was out.
Samberg has barely played away from Pionk this season, not enough imo to make a conclusion good or bad.

if you want to divert to previous years.... Samberg struggled with another partner, Logan Stanley (surprise surprise). Fantastic with Schmidt, also good with demelo and dillon in previous years.

how about give Samberg his props. guy is fantastic. thankfully he's developed & is here to help stabilize that 2nd pair after years. can't wait for him to be re-signed.

It’s interesting you refer to one by their last name and one by their first name.

Morrissey is having a very good year as well. If only we didn't have pylon giraffe on the 3rd pairing.

I think Pionk is a good partner for Samberg, but the Jets do better in terms of controlling play when Samberg is away from Pionk than when Pionk is away from Samberg.

Still, I think Pionk's play has improved this season. He seems faster and more physical. I wonder if he's more healthy than he's been in recent seasons.

samberg has moved up the ranks for me in the Jets most-valuable-players list this year. id probably conclusively have Helle (tier by himself), Scheifele, Morrissey & Connor ahead of him.

prior to the season, i was tempering labeling him a top-4D until i actually saw it over a large course of games, however now im sold. instead of posters being stans for Stan, they should be in for Dylan. crushed in a 3rd pair role 15m/gp his first few seasons, and now crushing it in a top-4 role at 21m/gp, other similarly aged Jets d-men can learn a bit from his ascension.

Interesting that you would notice that (ftr my first sentence I used both last names).

I'm pretty f***ing sure i did.

I just didn't like how it was necessary to try and disparage our second best offensive defenseman at the same time.

You did the first time.
I’m just wondering if there is a connection between familiarity and a greater attachment when using the first name. Just a weird line of thinking in my head.
