Dwight King Question re: Arbitration

I'll let Holden correct me if I'm wrong, but if he's offersheeted at $1.75 million and we don't match, we'll get a 2nd as compensation. I believe that's true right up to about $3.3 million or so. I think a 2nd is fair in terms of trade value, especially if it's a decent 2nd (projects as a 35-45 overall range pick, say from Florida, Edmonton, etc.).

Here's the 13-14 breakdown:

Over $1,110,249 to $1,682,194 Third-round pick
Over $1,682,194 to $3,364,391 Second-round pick
Over $3,364,391 to $5,046,585 First-round and third-round pick
Over $5,046,585 to $6,728,781 First-round, second-round and third-round pick
Over $6,728,781 to $8,410,976 Two first-round picks, second-round pick, third-round pick
Over $8,410,976 Four first-round picks

So, basically a 2nd round pick imo, as DL will probably match any compensation worth a 3rd.

So Dwight King's 15 goals aren't worth 2x2, but Radim Vrbata's 20 goals are worth 5x2... The NHL is a crazy crazy place.

I love the moves the Canucks have been making. They aren't good enough to make the playoffs, but they also won't take. They're staying a middle pack team. Hashtag AVERAGE.

Now that EDM has BIG RW Teddy Purcell, I'm thinking King would be the perfect LW on his line. With Purcell's size, and King's leaning ability...the cup is theirs!

I honestly have no idea what they're doing over there, none. It's like we did the five point palm exploding heart technique on them in 2012, and they've only taken three steps since...

Zack Kassian had 14 goals and 15 assists last year and he just signed a two-year contract with Vancouver for $1.75 million per year.

Gagner was happy he was traded out of the Pacific for about 20 minutes. Was Kassian that broke his jaw last year with a reckless high stick?

Marek v. Wyshynski had a great interview with him yesterday. He said he at least deserved a Lightning track suit.

And just for the record, I wasn't referring to Dwight King as a monkey. That's extremely offensive.

I was referring to Kassian because we've made jokes on here that he plays like a neanderthal. Especially after that game in LA this season where the ref told him to stop before the puck was dropped and he didn't. I hope everyone understands what I meant. I didn't mean to offend anyone.

I've called Kassian a monkey (as many others have on this site) because of his barbaric playing style where he does what he wants - like a monkey in the zoo. I was making a lighthearted joke comparing him to animals in a zoo that do what they want, when they want.

I should have quoted Primakov! (something I usually refuse to do). I hope that clears that up. My apologies.

What do you guys think of signing Penner for $2mil and trade King for a mid round pick in 2015?

I think we've seen King's potential and the last 2 season seasons, he hasn't impressed me too much and has been invisible for long stretches during the regular season.

Although Penner is a bit slower and more of a defensive liability than King, Penner has a better scoring touch and comes up big with needed.

I think a lot of people here underestimate Dwight's importance on forechecking and effectively stopping opponents break outs. I've seen it a hundred times and some of those have actually resulted in goals. I know he is soft for his size but I don't know how to value in money his defensive play which is this teams trademark. I think he is very good at defense in o zone but could be more on offense. He has shown flashes of it.

Spot on. Just look at game 2 of WCF, Kings were down 2:0 late(very late) in 2nd period. One dump in the corner by Richards and forecheck from King created just enough time and space for Richards to send puck infront towards Williams who deflected it in. Rest is history.

Without that late goal chances are Hawks go up 2-0 in series. That goal changed not just that game(Kings played extemly bad until that goal) but whole series.

I think some posters are confused about what some of us are saying about King's AAV. If King goes to arbitration, I believe most of us will agree that he will be awarded 2M+. However, in a one on one negotiations, King will get less. Simply for the fact that with an arbitrator, you can't factor in how many of King's goals were scored while playing on the bottom six compared to the top six. And since King will be our bottom six, we should pay him accordingly.

If Radim Vrbata could only negotiation with one team instead of all 30 you think he'd get $5 million? King is RFA, Vrbata is UFA, it's like comparing apples to battleships when it comes to wages.

King may have to accept a short term deal for now in order to cash out in the future. I can't see him getting over $2M quite yet, and for the upcoming year I'm not sure Lombardi wants to have King at that cap hit. Maybe at $1.5M on a one or two-year term and then negotiate a longer term deal after that. I still think he has a lot to prove, but at the very least he has proven to be a more important role player than the likes of Lewis, Clifford and Nolan.

When it goes to arbitration, the two sides bring in RFA comparables to back up their case.

They may not quantify how many goals are scored in the bottom 6, but they absolutely look at comparable players and their roles on the team.

And even if King is re-signed, where does he play??? I don't see room for him as our 3LW, since Richards is going to be given every opportunity to take back his 2C.

Gabby
Brownie
Carter
Pearson
Toffoli
Richards
Williams
Stoll

all, ahead of King. Heck, I'd even put Lewis ahead of King.
