Forgot about that one

But as bad as it was, losing Dumo for Nuke is several orders of magnitudes worse

Other people in management had it in for Despres way before JR came aboard, I'm not sure why, but they never liked him.

I don't think that trade happens with a different player involved, it was a weird situation.

To be fair Rutherford has a history of hilariously shortsighted trades (Ladd for Ruutu, JMFJ/Tverdovsky for Gleason/Belanger). Luckily for the Penguins I think ownership would nix any trade like this one, even if JR was foolish enough to do it.

Not with the Pens he doesn't. He's actually been quite good here - good enough to win GM of the Year. I understand why Canes fans don't care for him though.

Ahem, Lovejoy for Despres?

That wasn't JR's trade and he's said since then he wished he wouldn't have let himself be talked into it. Either way it worked out fine for the Pens in the end.

On the surface, it appears like that was a lop sided deal toward Anaheim. However, Lovejoy played well in the play-offs and helped us win the Cup. Despres hasn't done anything in Anaheim; was hurt for the majority of the year and is making 3.75 million for the next 5 years based on exactly what? Time will truly tell if that deal was bad or not. Right now, it was good for the Pens.

It looks good for the Pens but that's mainly down to Despres concussion which wasn't something JR was considering when making the trade.

I'm a huge fan of Derrick Pouliot. I really want to see him in our top 4 and not claimed by Vegas. I have nothing against Dumoulin, he's great but I know Dallas could use an upgrade on D, and I'm also a big Nichuskin fan.

Thoughts?

My head hurts.

Dumoulin was our second best defender in the cup run. He is going nowhere except for a huge overpayment.

Jesus this is an absolutely horrendous proposal. Pittsburgh would never ever consider it - nor should they.

Dallas would have to add considerably before PIT would even come close to agreeing to this.

Without Dumo, the Pens don't make the Cup. Without Dumo, the Pens don't pass the Capitals or Lightning. Trading a position of weakness to add to a position of strength? I'd rather lose Pouliot than Dumo.

If someone had their heart set on solidifying Pouliot into the top six there are many better ways you could go about it. In fact there are very few worse ways to go about it.

So you gamble on Pouliot and Nichushkin to pan out giving away a sure thing like Dumoulin? This make sense. :shakehead

I could imagine Nichushkin breaking out alongside the likes of Corsby and Malkin... but lets be honest, I'd say no. The Penguins top 4 defense is just above average at this point in time, and Doumolin is a decently big part of it. Removing Doumolin really hurts the Penguins defense

Dumo-Letang
Maatta-Daley

That's a top 5 defense.

Pretty shocked this is still getting talked about, honestly

I'm not. There are pretty bad ideas out there every day on this board. People don't look at depth charts nor cap situations before throwing something out there ridiculously. This was a bad bad idea for Pittsburgh. Laughable. However, its nothing new on this board.

Nah, I think calling it above average is fair. Their defense is probably in the 10-12 range in the NHL and their top-4 is probably lower top-10.

In terms of individual skill, I tend to agree. However I'd say that our defense is one of the best assembled defenses in the league.

Our defense in a vacuum, 10-12 I agree.

Our defense with our forwards within our system, they play very well. Top 5 I'm not sure. But certainly better than they are legitimiately given credit for.

I mean...Rangers were supposed to expose them right? When they didn't, Washington FOR SURE will expose them! When they didn't, Tampa ABSOLUTELY will expose them! When they didn't, SAN JOSE...whoa boy...they are the ones that will finally do it! When it didn't...having 4 straight offenses, include the top ones in the league and in the playoffs effectively shut down...silence. But surely they will be exposed this coming year...amiright?

Back to the topic, Dumo for Nuke is garbage.

I'd do MAF for Niemi+Nuke though.

NYI (this one is arguable imo)
Washington (this one is arguable imo)

That's 9, which puts the Penguins around 10.

We should be number nine on that list. Our defense is better than Washingtons.

I would like that, but I feel like the window for this being a fair deal will soon be gone, and I'm pretty sure that we won't be trading Fleury before the season.

Why does it always seem to be Senators fans who are down on the Pens' defense? Is it because of that thread from a while back where a bunch of people talk about about how the Sens blueline is average?

In any case, I wish the OP would stop making these proposals. They either seem to vastly favor the Pens (ie. the other team gets ripped off) or they involve trading an important player for the Pens for no legitimate reason.

Dumoulin is the Pens' best defensive defenseman. He's a good compliment to Letang on the top pairing, or a rock solid counterpart to Daley on the second pairing. It makes zero sense to trade him for someone who is a question mark and isn't an upgrade over the Pens' current top two RWers.
