I remember an interview with Tikkanen at the time where he referred to his #97 and said something like "there was this young kid who wouldn't give up his #10 shirt", referring to Dave Lowry who is just a couple of weeks younger than him.

I'm not sure if this is the reason why he choose 97, but he signed with the Panthers in '97.
