Why would Duchene sign an extension now and not go to market in July?

If he wants to be in Nashville ( or whatever city), gets the amount and term he wants, gets a chance to make an extra run at the playoffs, gets the opportunity to settle into the city 6 months early, and be ready for next season...aside from that there's really no benefits.

I'd be shocked if he ended up traded to Nashville. I'm just not sure we have the assets to make it happen or the will of the GM

Really? I think its the exact opposite.. They have the assets (1st, Tolvanen, Fiala, Fabbro, all could be assets included in a deal), and the GM has expressed serious interest in Duchene in the past.

I wouldn't be surprised if he took Duchene on now to make a run this year before you really have to pay him.

I dunno man. Hard to say really depending on the other offers out there. I can see the 1st and one of those pieces, but Ottawa would have to take cap back.

Highly doubt they want to deal Tolvanen tho

The issue with that is that if we sign Duchene we would most likely have to cut salary elsewhere to get under the cap next year. If that is the case then we would need those assets on their ELCs in Fabbros or Tolvanens case or on a cheap bridge deal for Fiala in order to have enough depth on the wing to be competitive. I could see Poile being in if the price stays at one of those players plus our first, perhaps even including a lesser prospect as well, but if the cost is two of our better pieces I don't think we can afford that price in the long run.

1st+Tolvanen+Grant Mismash+Craig Smith?
Maybe conditional pick instead on Mismash (based on re-signing)

I think it could get done

What about Bonino - doesn't he make close to 5m

He makes $4.1M and either Craig Smith or Bonino would most likely have to be moved if we did sign Duchene long term. That along with the uncertainty around Austin Watson make it even more difficult to part with what we think we be quality depth players next year on cheap contracts.

It is said tolvanen is part of the offer by credible people
It is only logical that Tolvanen would be included in an offer for any top-6 forward they intend to sign long-term. The Preds already have a fairly robust group of top-6 forwards - adding another one makes it that much harder for Tolvanen to break in, so makes him more "expendable" in the deal.

Yeah I was thinking Bonino could be part of the trade.

Ottawa needs a stop gap center when they move Duchene imo

If I were a GM looking to trade for Matt I'm not sure how much I believe him when he says he's "open" to signing an extension. The guy is a consummate pro and schooled well in the art of PR. He always leaves things open ended like how he was "open" to coming back to Colorado after getting traded and how he was "open" to re-signing in Ottawa even when everyone with half a brain cell knew he wasn't going to be part of another rebuild.
