Abercrombie announced that he’s taking the next step in his coaching journey and it’s a big one. Abercrombie was hired by the Toronto Maple Leafs to work as a Coaching Development Associate.

Only one news source so far, not confirmed elsewhere yet. Allegedly will be in Traverse city.

This seems to confirm it.

He will be in Traverse City he was listed as part of the coaching staff when the roster came out.

Coaching Development? Does that mean teaching coaches how to be better coaches?

A while back the Leafs posted this job to give opportunity to minority coaches who are looking to grow in professional hockey and to learn and be mentored by others within the organization. I’m guessing he’s the successful candidate of that job posting.

Ryan Hardy said as much at his presser; though in the presser, he was talking specifically about Malhotra, the point stands.

You know what is a minority in Leaf coaching anyone who has come close to winning a Stanley.

The leafs have had coaches who have won Stanley Cups before. Just another dumb joke. I actually like the fact that they are a progressive club and trying to get more people into hockey. That’s what it should be about. Keep growing the game, hopefully someone you bring in proves to be a difference maker. It comes at no cost. Just $ which we have an abundance of!

New Kids On The Block had a bunch of hits
Chinese food makes me sick
And I think it's fly when girls stop by
For the summer, for the summer
I like girls that wear Abercrombie & Fitch
I'd take her if I had one wish
But she's been gone since that summer
Since that summer

LFO circa 1999

:naughty:

What do you mean trying to get more people into hockey. There is no one in Ontario that would like an internship and is qualified? You have to go to Massachusetts? This is pure politics.

They don’t want more of the same they already have. It has nothing to do with politics. I’m sure there were a ton of minority coaches from Ontario who applied as well. However they felt that this guy from Massachusetts was the best fit and the most qualified for the role. I don’t get why you’re making such a stink about this. It’s a specific role with specific criteria the leafs were looking to hire for. Which was for A MINORITY COACH. So if you aren’t a visible minority you don’t qualify for the position.

Additionally I believe this is an NHL wide initiative, there were many NHL teams league wide who made a hire for this specific position. Why you ask? The league is recognizing that hey there are Mexican, Black, Latino, Arab, Indian, African, Caribbean, Middle Eastern ect hockey people out there who may be great hockey minds but are not getting opportunities to break into the league because as we see with the current NHL coaching hiring, unless you’re a white male you’re not getting a head coaching job or NHL GM job.

For those looking for more information, it's right here on the leafs website Management and Coaching Development Program

Who is the ideal Coaching Development candidate?

The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking for an individual with any level of coaching experience in hockey who is Black or Indigenous or identifies as part of another marginalized and/or racialized group and exemplifies a passion and dedication to growth within the game of hockey. The ideal candidate has demonstrated their work in any aspect of hockey operations or coaching including but not limited to minor hockey, post-secondary and/or community programs.

What a pile of poop. Arab, African, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, Mexico are such red hot hockey markets. This is 100% political.
There are many minorities in Ontario who actually grew up with hockey. Belief me even NFL did not search in Arab nations for minority hires, they have their own at home.
I understand minority coaching positions and creating opportunities. I for one do not give a rats bum about Massachusetts minority candidates while thousands surround our own arena every day.
So it is political. Do you know how many minorities graduate each year from college and university programs within 200km of our arena, with credentials and knowledge and hockey desires. Nice they hired Hayley Wickenhiser and not someone from the South African hockey team.

not that it bothers me that much but I agree with you that the Leafs should have hired a minority candidate from Ontario

Lol you’re lost in the head man. If anyone has any idea it’s me considering I am a black hockey fan myself. Who gives a shit whether they are black and from Ontario or from Alberta or black and from anywhere in the US. The criteria isn’t limited to Black Canadians. It’s black people in general.

Clearly they went through the process and if there were any black ontarian candidates the leafs felt they weren’t the best fit for whatever reason. You’re reading way too much into this. The nationality doesn’t matter, what matters is that organizations are giving people of colour an opportunity to work hard and grow within an NHL organization.

In all honesty I’m pretty sure that was likely their goal but clearly the applicants weren’t strong or they weren’t the right fit. Also I think it demonstrates that this isn’t just your prototypical minority hire in a publicity stunt. They wanted to grab the best person possible who will bring value to the organization. So I don’t get why people have a problem with the fact that this person is not based in Ontario.

Additionally last year the Black woman (Marian Agyei Gyamera) they hired for the Management Development Associate Role was from Ontario and the Black man (T.J. Millar) they hired for the Coaching Development Associate role was from Calgary.

Every year they choose two new people to be in those roles.. So no they aren't excluding people from Ontario or Canada.

i don't want to knock this person but it's not like his resume jumps out at you to believe he would have blown away every candidate from Ontario so that's why he was chosen over a person from our market

and he may be qualified for this position but i'd bet he's in some way connected or at least knows someone who's already in our organization

anyway , as i already said i really don't care who they hired which doesn't mean i don't believe in this program , it just means i don't see it as affecting the team one way or another

I would agree with that statement. But again the whole point of the program isn't to find someone who has the most hockey experience, it's to find someone who is involved in hockey (not already at the highest level) and expose them to the opportunity of working in an NHL organization for 1 year. They are basically trying to provide opportunities to those who probably wouldn't ever get that shot. He probably had a great interview, but he knows Graeme Townshend (who works for the leafs or did at one point), but doing some research he's pretty well respected in the D.C. Area. It's a 1-year program, hopefully he's a sponge and soaks as much as he can!

Dubas barely had a hockey background and look how good that innovative hiring has turned out.

It never hurts to have some around that may have fresh ideas.
