Play nice, folks. You're debating about a fringe 2nd line defender, after all. Nothing to get too worked up about by my estimation. ;)

Disagree there, Petry is on the same level as Dan DeKeyser at the very least and on the right side with better puck movement skills. He would be vying for the title of second best D-man on this team assuming he could grasp the system quick enough.

Would give him 5 X 5 in a heartbeat in the off-season. Petry is a good player, playing some of his best hockey of his career since Eakins left. That was the only time Jeff Petry has not looked very good was when Eakins was doing an awful job even by Oilers standards.

They aren't dealing though as if they don't want to part with one of those three it isn't going to happen. I hope they are in on him in the off-season after they talk to Mike Green.

As someone that said over and over I am perfectly content with the continuation of the rebuild on the fly I am okay with this. I do hope a big swing is going to be taken either at the draft or free agency. But if Holland doesn't like the prices right now that is fine, something needs to be done though by early July.

Sekera would instantly become our 2nd best defenseman. If Detroit can't get Yandle or Green, Sekera would be our next best option even if he is a lefty. He moves the puck well and he can chip in on offense as well. We could have Kronwall, Sekera, and Dekeyser anchor their own pairing. It would allow us to play all 3 pairings evenly and not have to worry as much about matchups or sheltered pairings.

sekera is very good but issues at RD would still exist.

Take a look at Petry in action...or check out his scouting report. His strengths (great passer, excellent in transition, good accurate shot from the point) are things we don't have on the blue line. Forget him being a RH shot...just his skill set is something we need. A "significant upgrade" isn't about getting the best player...it's about upgrading an area of NEED. For THIS Wings team with this CURRENT roster Petry is definitely a significant upgrade.

I've watched him closely when given the opportunity and I like his strengths. Overall I see him as a modest upgrade...not a significant one. I don't see a Wings team w/ or w/o Jeff Petry in the playoffs yielding a significantly different result. I don't hate him on a 3 year deal at $4-4.5m, but that's about it.

Rather pass on him as a UFA unless he's really cheap or sign him to a 3yr deal in the summer if KH can't get Green.

Green's likely going to command more money simply because he's Mike Green. I'd rather give someone like Petry who's coming from a horrible team a shot to redeem himself and show what he's got. The tools are there, he just needs the structure within which to flourish.

Besides, Petry's younger (27 vs 29) and - more importantly for Babcock - bigger (6'3" vs 6'1") than Green. Given the choice, I'd bet he'd take Petry.

Mike Green is going to demand note money but I'd argue he is exactly what this team needs short of someone like OEL. People knock on Green's defensive abilities but he certainly can't, and isn't any worse than smith or erroricson. He's a right handed shot, he's an excellent puck mover, and he has great offensive instincts.

Holland NEEDS to target green aggressively over the offseason because there's no way Washington trades him while they're looking to contend. Green is a significant upgrade over our current d corps. Petry is not.

I'm usually against it, but this is a prime scenario you trade for rights and then get the jump to work out a deal.

Of course, the new CBA allows other teams to approach upcoming UFAs before, correct? Was it 1 week or 2 weeks? Does that minimize the need to trade for rights or simply amplify that need?

I'm not enjoying the idea that Quincey and DeKeyser are a locked in stone pairing. Ugh. Quincey was a band-aid signing after Holland struck out on like 6 other guys this off-season. Why is he locked into this team after half a season of modest play?

Because we're winning, Dekeyser carries him, and he isn't a total dumpster fire. And I think the week of negotiating with anyone will make it harder for teams to convince guys to sign after trading for their rights - at least not without (at least appearing to) overpaying a bit.

Anything to bump Ericsson down a pair would be nice in my book.

From my dream journal for next year.

Kronwall - Green
DeKeyser - Ericsson
Ouellet - Marchenko

Quincey, Smith, and Kindl all traded or given away on waivers or whatever. That also would free up $8 million in cap space. Yeah, those 3 guys are taking up all the money it would take to comfortably sign a big name like Green and replace the bottom pairing with rookie salaries.

For my realistic dream journal at the deadline.

Kronwall - Ericsson
DK - Petry/Zidlicky/ somebody who shoots right and isn't terrible
Quincey - Marchenko

Smith and Kindl are on the outs eventually. I'm fine with letting Marchenko stay on the bottom pairing since his handedness seems to help so much and he's not noticeably worse than anybody else we've seen at that spot.

Sooo they don't intend on making a trade then? Cuz that's what this means.

That's basically what it seems like. Enjoy the first round exit everyone!

Eh, long as they are healthy they'll be a threat to win a few rounds, but guys like Quincey, Ericsson, and DeKeyser are going to have to play out of their minds against the better teams.

I'm fairly certain that it is 1 week.

Unfortunately, with our current roster, I don't think it's good enough to make it out of the 1st/2nd round tops. Teams start to buckle down defensively. Less penalties are called. Our backend would be destroyed by a team that effectively forechecks. The formula to beat this team is already out there, and it's not a difficult one either. Everyone in the d corps except for Kronwall and Dekeyser handle the puck like it's a hot grenade. A simple but effective forecheck is all it takes for their to be turnovers almost every time we try to move the puck up ice. That's not good at all.

The only way (with this current roster at least) this team makes it to the SCF or even the Eastern Conference Finals, is if Datsyuk and Zetterberg put the team on their back and literally drag this team into the finals. Thats the only way I can see us having a shot at the Cup with this current roster.

Just my .02 cents of course.

Not to go all Mike Babcock on you, but your star players have to be star players if you want to go anywhere.

Name the team making deep runs without their stars shouldering the load. I guess you could look at a concussed Rick Nash Rangers, who were ultimately dismantled after a deep run. But McDonagh and Lundqvist played lights out and I have never thought of Nash as an outright superstar, all-star yes but not a superstar for me.

Anyway, point being when Crosby goes quiet the Pens get knocked out. When Zetterberg was crushing Toews we had Chicago on deaths door. A big part of the Ducks problem has been Perry's inability to shoulder the playoff load.

We aren't going anywhere without Datsyuk or Zetterberg playing very well, because no team goes very far in the Stanley Cup Playoffs without their stars. Without them playing at carry the team levels in 08 and 09 we exit early too and that is with more depth and Lidstrom.

That is just how the playoffs work.

I agree with a lot of things you have said in this post. The sentence I bolded part of the point I'm trying to get across. D and Z would have to play at a PPG + on a team that is not as good the ones in 08/09 just for us to have a chance. Unless Detroit can acquire a Yandle or a Sekera, (and even that might not be enough) I have a hard time seeing them contending for the Cup this year.

I don't agree with that. If their play is about on par with what they've done this season to date we'll have a chance to win. We have so much depth at forward it's pretty likely someone will be providing offense over a seven game series - Nyquist, Tatar, Sheahan, Pulkkinen, Helm, Abby, whatever. The defense will have to play above their heads to get us deep, but I think it's more on Howard. He can't let in soft goals that we've gotten accustomed to him letting in now and then. I like Jimmy more than most but he's definitely the biggest question mark to our run.

I think some of you guys are approaching it the wrong way.... Petry may not win you a series but having a guy like Kindl out there in a injury scenario can sure as hell help lose you one. I'm a big Petry fan, real solid player stuck in a awful situation.
