Sorry Mr Neutral fan, but I think you are the one that is lost here.
You didn't specify any conditions why Draisaitl would be "on the trade block". You said "if he was on for whatever reason".
So we're left to assume... it could be: we've decided to trade Drai for a franchise goalie and futures/depth, it could be he's asked for a trade and kept it quiet, it could be he's demanded a trade only to Ottawa... it could be he's demanded a trade to any team.
Regardless of the scenario, Oilers are holding a strong hand, since:
- He's a recent MVP
- He's a big center
- He's got a fantastic contract
- He's signed for four more years (ie he has term
So yeah... Oilers are going to hold a bidding war, and I don't think it is unreasonable to assume that 29 GMs would LINE UP to take on $8.5M in cap for a 120 point scorer. Call me crazy.
[checks quickly:... oh yes, 30 of 32 teams have $8.5M in cap for next year, so they can all make it happen especially since Edmonton would surely expect a few roster players back]
So there is going to be a bidding war, and yet here are some of the "lost" arguments you've made here:
- First and foremost, that a projected 60-70 point kid wanting a Draisaitl-like salary, who is UNSIGNED, plus a decent young two-way C that maybe projects to be what, a 60 point guy? and a 1st is enough for an $8.5M Art Ross/MVP who is young and has term... and that nobody would outbid you
- ... while not even considering Edmonton's needs (I don't see a goalie in there)
- And a UFA to be Hossa is a decent comparable
- And 4 years contract should be considered too short, thus Drai's value is less
- Not to mention these gems:
- Carson was the main value coming back for Gretzky, not the 4 other 1st rounders + CASH
- A 4th overall was the main value coming back for Lindros, not Forsberg, or Vezina winner Hextall, or a 75 point 27 year old defenseman named Duchesne, or a 21 year old 56 point two-way center named Ricci, plus Simon, plus Huffman, plus another 1st round pick
