I'd rather Matthews say nothing.

It's like me saying you you of course I'm smarter, better looking and all-around more of a talented person than you. Do you find that insulting or absolute? Would you take that as an insult or say, yeah Bluelines probably has a good point? Its the two words "of course" it's so dismissive, it completely ignores the fact the Leafs are a hell of a good team, that the Leafs worked their assess off to be better in 6 games out of 7 games. It's arrogant TBH.
You're a stranger on the internet, I wouldn't care in the slightest what you said nor feel any need to point out how wrong you are ;)
Let Draisaitl be arrogant, as far as I've always been taught arrogance hinders performance more than it helps it. I'd rather beat them in the playoffs, that's far better validation than one of their superstar players admitting that we're a better team.

Every protagonist needs their antagonist, every hero a villian?

He is one of the best players in the league, he is physically imposing and shows an an air of arrogance and superiority while dismissing his opponent.

.... I like it.

Happy to count him as a villian to the dear hero Leafs.

If your goalie is outplayed in a playoff series anyone can beat you. Confidence is nice. Reality can be a bitch though. The goalies need to play much better for the Leafs to be a true playoff threat.

Common mistake. In German the phrase "we can beat that team" sounds remarkably similar to "the Leafs are the high paragon of hockey in 2021."

It's amazing how often this mistake has popped up over the years

OP, have you ever played competitive sports?

I wouldn't want any guy on my team that didn't 100% believe they could beat anybody. Inferiority complexes are for losers. In what world should the defending winner of the Hart Trophy be talking like a loser? He didn't get that get by being any less than ultra competitive.

Disrespectful? Come on man, it's the highest tier of competitive sports. Can you imagine if Auston Matthews or John Tavares were asking if Toronto could beat Boston in a playoff series and they went full Linus in response?

Your reply is pointless. :)

So they win once in OT and they are utterly confident that they can beat us? You lose 6 out of 7 games and you are confident you can beat a team? Wouldn't logic dictate that if you lose 6 out of 7 games, you shouldn't go into the next game with the Leafs confident you can beat them? What gives you confidence you can beat the Leafs? One win? The Leafs have a .857 winning percentage against the Oil this year and Leon is confident they can beat us? We have 13 out of a possible 14 points vs them. They are the reason why we are in 1st place and they are confident they can beat us? . One win? One? One win? ONE. One win.... ONE....

Are there any Leaf fans that are confident going into a game vs Ottawa that we can beat Ottawa? or Winnipeg? We've beat both of those teams but are we confident we can beat them? Hopeful maybe but confident?
C’mon man. Relax. It is a quote that athletes use in every sport.
After Boston owned us for the last few playoff years, would you want our players saying “we’re as good as they are and we CAN beat them”
Or do you honestly think they would cower and say “we’re not as good as them and I’m afraid”?

It's the "of course" part that gets me. It's disrespectful TBH.
You sure get offended easily! Maybe he should have said something like this instead: “We have to figure out the playoffs. Four years in a row is a little bit embarrassing.” Auston Matthews after losing to Columbus last year.
