Based on the pre draft data, yes… Maybe even 2 tiers…

What Barkov did pre draft is unheard of in Liiga, he was a true 17yo two-way center who scored just under PPG, that's ridiculous.

With hindsight Avs did fine, i'd rank them right now very Close. I'd probably still take Barkov id i had to choose though, but pre draft it really shouldn't have been Close and i'm not sure what kinds of drugs the scouting/prospect Community was on.

Probably something called TSN bias....

Hughes size is not an issue by itself. Look at Kane, Marner, Keller, Gaudreau, Panarin, etc. You can be under 6'0 and not 180 pounds, and be very successful. The issue is the way he plays up the middle for a smaller center. There's like one guy in the NHL with his style of game and size that plays up the middle, Brayden Point. The rest play wing.

Hughes has had a slow start this season. I wouldn't worry, but he's playing worse so far this season than his last season. He'll be in the NHL next year anyway, but I don't think he's ended the 1OA discussion. I think it's looking pretty wide open right now. I think he'll end up going 1OA because the tide is favoring him and that'll likely win out if no one separates themselves from him.

I don't have an issue with Hughes size, i just think Kakko torching Liiga makes him easier to project as a future elite NHLer.

Couldn't Hughes go early to college if he wanted to? Or is there an age issue there? Or just too lazy to study up that extra year ;P

Oh, make no mistake — I think both guys are legit ELITE level talents.

While I think Hughes is the top talent, Kakko would be the type of talent who could someday challenge for the title of best Rangers forward of all-time, and one of the best Rangers’ players at any position in franchise history.

So it’s not necessarily Hughes or bust.

Looked through some comparables to Kakko and all i have to say is that Barkov should have gone #1, his draft season was absolutely incredible as an early september birth date in Liiga. If i was doing prospect rankings/analysis back then i'd have hyped the **** out of him, a full tier or two ahead of #2.

I guess it depends on if MacKinnon is closer to the 2018 version moving forward, or the years prior.

If last year is the plateau he’s reached, I’d probably still go with him. If it’s close to the prior version, and we’re looking at a healthy Barkov, I’d probably go with Barkov.

I think some of what you’re seeing is the evolution of how Finnish prospects are viewed.

For many years, a lot of Finnish prospects were seen as guys who thrived in systems, but that those systems didn’t necessarily produce a ton of stars.

They made very good, sometimes excellent support players, but teams were hesitant to draft them with a lot of the highest picks.

In the last several years, we’ve seen a shift there and we’re seeing amazing talent come out of that league — with Barkov being on the front end of that shift.

I realized this a little while back as well. With hindsight I think I take MacKinnon, but at the time there would have been no doubt in my mind that Barkov should be #1.

With Barkov and MacKinnon available in the same draft, it was a wash really. You need a two-way elite center => pick Barkov; you need the fastest offensive center in the game (fine 2nd to McWhoopy) => you pick McKinnon.

That's how it looks now IMO, I remember the discussions on 1OA was MacKinnon vs Jones - Barkov wasn't really a part of that (purely from memory, I can be way off on this one). I think @ManUtdTobbe's point, at least this is how I view it, is that at the time of the draft Barkov's production in Liiga as a 17 y/o strongly suggested that he was a significantly superior prospect to MacKinnon from a purely offensive perspective. Add the 2-way play and the choice is a slam dunk.

But as I said earlier, I would probably take MacKinnon with hindsight - though it's not an easy choice.

I was going over goalie depth in the prospects thread and realized that NYR could be in trouble with depth in the coming years. Wouldn't be surprised if they took another goalie this year. Depth after this year is looking like....

Lundqvist
Georgiev
Shesterkin *Hypothetically*
Huska *If he goes pro*
- Lindbom
- Wall

Halverson (RFA), Nell (RFA), Mazanec (UFA), and Tokarski (UFA)

With this said, I think this is a good year for keepers!! Fingers crossed for a good one to drop into the later portion of the draft!!

No way I’d have Geo before Shestyorkin. The way things are going, I think Lundqvist will have a hard time keeping him out of the starting job.

If we end up 4-6 and can't grab Hughes, Turcotte or Kakko do we hope for Byram, Cozens, Krebs or Dach?

For the little that I've seen, Cozens. But you know we will end up drafting Podkolzin because we are the Rangers.
Yep nothing is a guarantee that's for sure. It's gonna be interesting and I hope we can secure a top 3/4 pick so we don't have to go thru this crap again.

All great players but I'd love to get Byram. Could be the #1 dman that this team is missing dearly
Not saying I am against Byram (would have loved Dobson this year) just seems that everyone has their sights on one of those potential top centers
