If Gaudreau or a Yvan Cournayer played center, was 5 inches bigger, and 25 lbs heavier, and a step faster, and had elite edges (think Subban, McDavid).... that's Jack Hughes. I don't worry about the size at all. He's not like a Matthews with that size speed & skill quotient, he's not like a Kane who controls the pace of the game... He's a high speed dynamo that slices through the defense and creates lanes and chances.

So you are saying Gaudreau is 5'5 and 140 pounds? Hughes is listed as 5'10 and mid 160's for weight. Hughes is in reality about an inch taller, probably 5-10 pounds heavier.

I do see a lot of similarities in how they try to play the game. I've compared him to Kane, but I've started to think he's more like Gaudreau. It goes without saying that he's a much better Gaudreau, but very similar stylistically.

Just being nitpicky, but I think Gordie said they had him as the second best forward in the draft; if I remember correctly.

The connotation of that being that we had him in the 3rd-5th range.

We're both in the right. I'll try to find the video, but he did mention him as their 3rd best player and 2nd best forward (Dahlin and Svechnikov before him) on their list.

That’s why I don’t mind being bad this year to get a shot at drafting this guy (Hughes).

Johnny Hockey is about 5'6-5'7" & 155 lbs, and that's being generous. I expect Hughes to be around 5'11 & 180. Below is a pic of Gaudreau next to 6'1" Monahan, on skates, with Sean tilting downwards. Nothing against the guys size, the player is a top 10 winger in the league. But the point remains, a smaller player, with that elite skill level, and skating ability can rack up the points.

Lucas Raymond is destroying Slovakia today. Maybe the best single game junior international performance I've seen all year. He's played about half the game, and I can count on one hand the amount of shifts he hasn't created a scoring chance. With some better finishing from Sweden today, he'd have like 7 points.

Edit: Incredibly dirty from the Slovaks. They injured him away from the play with a couple minutes to go. But he came back for one final shift and skated by the whole team and nearly scored a highlight-reel goal.

Russia won 7-2 against Finland. Beat down. Russia had 60 shots. Canada won 10-0 against Switzerland. Bad year for the Swiss. Most of their best players are eligible for the following draft, not the upcoming one. USA won 5-0 with what is basically the "B" team against Czech Republic.

Canada look like the favorites followed by Russia. Sweden has the top-end talent to compete, but probably not the depth. USA and Finland probably don't have the talent to keep up with the best teams at this tournament.

I only caught the end of the Canada game, but Dylan Cozens supposedly had a very good game. He might be the first Canadian off the board in the upcoming draft.

But give the other Dylan Cozens, who was the rookie of the year in the Western Hockey League last year in Lethbridge, a little longer and we’ll all know who he is. The six-foot-three, 180-pound right-shot centre, on display for Canada at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, could go in the top three in next June’s draft.

That would be an enormous feat for a kid born in Whitehorse, Yukon.

“In my view, Dylan is the second best player next to Jack Hughes,” said Craig Button, TSN’s draft expert.
“He’s big, he’s strong, smart. He can do a lot of different things.”

Cozens is not a prodigy like Michigan centre Hughes, whom scouts say has some Connor McDavid in him because he’s better than everybody else at his age. But Cozens, 17, could be No. 2.

“He’s the whole package for me,” said Button.

“Very competitive on the puck,” Central Scouting’s John Williams told NHL.com.

Dylan Cozens could go as high as second overall at 2019 NHL Draft

I freely admit that while I liked Cozens, I wasn’t blown away by him like I expected to be.

He’s definitely on the higher end of the spectrum in terms of a prospect who could combine skill with the larger frame, something that’s somewhat lacking in the 2019 draft class. But there’s a lot of high end skill at the top of this draft class among the top forwards.

Man, it'll be interesting to see how Yaroslav Likhachev will do in the Q this year. He's incredibly flashy for Russia in the Hlinka!!

I'm putting it out there now that Arthur Kaliyev will be my surprise top-5 pick this year. I still need to put some feelers out on Kirby Dach, but my top-5 going into this year is Hughes, Kakko, Cozens, Newhook, and Kaliyev. Turcotte, Byram, Helleson, Guskov, and Krebs are, in no order, 6-10 for me.

I still can't tell if Vlasic is good because he's a behemoth for his age, or if he's actually going to be that talented against his peers.

I feel like Vlasic, early on, is this year's Nic Hague

I'll raise you one Podkolzin ;)

One name to look out for, too, is Wiljami Myllyla out of Finland. Incredibly raw and slim, but put up 42 goals last year in Jr. A along with 68 points. Got a couple of Mestis games in too as a 16 year old.

Should play in Liiga with HIFK this year....

Guskov and London were a match made in heaven!!
I definitely think I'm reaching on him, but I'll stick to that projection for now. I have a feeling Dach is easily going to usurp that spot once I start paying more attention to him this season. I'd hope Dach starts scoring more goals too.

I don’t even find him to be good. I think the point totals are very deceiving.
I have that suspicion too, but they did catch my eye. I think he’s getting by based on a size advantage right now, so it’ll be interesting to see if college hockey helps him
