Why avoid Suzuki until the 2nd?

Also, why no Dorofeyev or Brink?

I'm definitely not the only one who sees the gaps in Suzuki's game. He had a major drop off in production the back half of the year and doesn't play well defensively which isn't a good sign for a natural offensive center.

I listed my top 10 names I think could be there at #20. I have Dorofeyev at #23 and Brink at #27 on my list. I like them, just not at #20. I responded to the question with personal opinion, not with consensus.

Ain't your enemy dog, lolol. Everyone has opinions....

I disagree with Suzuki. He's one of the smartest offensive players in the draft and has excellent speed to get open. He's more a playmaker than a scorer, but his shot is highly underrated. He can hit bar down from the top of the circle with power. At 17 years old, that's tough to do in arguably the best junior league. He's not defensively inept. Has good positioning as a center to help out his D-men behind the net and in front. Good awareness to help keep pucks out of home plate with good hand-eye. He isn't that physical, but he'll get in the dirty areas. He's very shifty along with that. If an opponent were to line him up for a hit, he's skilled enough to get around it. Suzuki, definitely, deserves to go in the teens. I would recommend seeing some more videos of his overall game.

My fault, didn't see that you had both of them there. I can respect the fall, but I feel both players have excellent skills to put them in the teens, as well. Dorofeyev, especially.

On Harley, many CHL kids will drop on draft day guaranteed. They haven’t delivered well in the last drafts and players picked haven’t either on average been impressive, it has been the opposite.

It’s not strange, the CHL is a big scene. Hockey is played there now, not many other places. Many have memories of kids that stood out to a certain extent there and how they could make the jump to the NHL. But it’s just not a high flying program right now. From my POV it’s starting to get close to that drought they had for some years in the 90s.

I’ve a pretty good track of some of these kids and I think some expectations out there on some of them are going totally wild. There are good kids from Canada, but you must be really picky. The kids that just are solid and OK across the board will come in way off target if you expect them to be good 1st round picks. Suzuki? Tomasino? I like Krebs and think that he should get a shot in the 1st, but I think 20 is way to high for him too given his poor skating. Harley?? Really? Or why not, I get the point with Harley. Could become an OK No 6.

It’s also risky because the level of play in the CHL is so low but the scouting g around the league is very stats based. The number of kids ranked ahead of someone like Rees is just odd. Rees works really hard, he isn’t a total stiff. Why are so many guys, who don’t even remotely have the same wheels and engine as Rees, that also are smaller, ranked ahead of Rees? Have many poor skating finesse players from the CHL done well in the NHL lately? It’s the complete opposite.

You're not the only one but I'm not sure why all the dislike for Harley. Really good skater--has offensive upside--very good size and he's one of the youngest players in the draft--he's an August 2001. So to me there's real upside there. Not sure he'd be the guy to take at #20 but that also depends on what's left on the board. I do prefer Seider--but that's more because we have a bunch of young LD's and not as many RD's and also because I think Seider is more physical. Not sure he'll be around at #20 though--I would be guessing probably not and I don't think I'd move up for him.

if we stay at 20 or even trade DOWN a bit I think I like Samuel Poulin a lot. I think his size and his game will translate nicely in NHL (and he has the NHL bloodlines):

If we are to trade up then I think I want either Zegras or Krebs I have a feeling they bring something that our current pool of prospects/rookies is missing.

Will do, but if you have a sub at prospectshifts.com they got plenty of video on him!!

I got a sub yesterday, didn't work instantly but now I think its up and running. Like it, great idea! Anyone we know that is running it?

Stuff is confusing with the defensive guys after Byram in the draft this year. Literally everyone has a different favorite. you could ask one person and they would choose Heinola. ask another and they would choose Seider. ask another its Broberg. ask another its Soderstrom.

Could probably put M Robertson, Harley, maybe even Bjornfot and Thomson with them.

I feel like there is group of forwards too where it's kind of similar, where it comes down to whoever one's favorite is.

Caufield
Dorofeyev
Tomasino
Kaliyev
Suzuki

I like Tomasino and Dorofeyev of that group but it seems like any of them could be the best pick out of that group.

Some people would probably have Lavoie, Brink, McMichael, Nikolayev, Afanasyev, etc in there too and maybe rightfully so.

I wouldn’t be disappointed with York. I think he’s a real solid prospect. Maybe one that doesn’t fit here the best as the team has somewhat of an over abundance of what he brings to the table. But then again...BPA over need all day long.

Would rather a couple of other players there but wouldn’t be disappointed with York as a NYR.

I have no idea why he's pegging the Oilers to take Zegras. I think there is less than zero chance they draft an american who is going to the NCAA.
One of the reasons I think they'd be better off trading down, there are several non NCAA Canadian prospects who could go later on in round 1. They should probably try to get one of them if not two.
