FWIW, Ville Heinola as been playing alongside Tarmo Reunanen in Lukko. It's known that the Rangers have been in contact with Tarmo this year (not sure if in person or elsewhere). Could be speculative that NYR are taking a look at the young defenseman....

;)
Isn't Saarela's younger brother on that team too?

Thoughts on Caufield? Wouldn't mind taking a flyer on him with one of the picks we accumulate.

It's a small mans NHL

Because he's flashy and performed at the right moments (international tournaments). That's it.

Because they overvalue short international tournaments and "Tools"

I think you're both underselling him quite a bit. His 200 foot game is exceptional. He plays hard and physical. He backchecks his tail off. And the goals that he has scored reveals what kind of offensive talent he has.

Guess we'll see..

I've seen quite a lot from him this season and a little last season. I've been to several games he played in and I think the top-3 ranking is a bit much.

I've said before that I would pick Dorofeyev over Podkolzin and I stand by that statement.

Ranking aside, what kind of player do you see him developing into as an NHL'r?

Podkolzin? Tough to say. From a Ranger perspective: A more skilled Vesey, I guess. Maybe a bit of Victor Arvidsson in there. But the biggest question mark for me with Podkolzin is his lack of consistency

Dorofeyev is basically a Kravtsov clone. Both Kravtsov and Dorofeyev I would compare to Filip Forsberg.

The only comparison I see with Pod and Vesey is they both play hockey. Pod is much more dynamic. Better hands. Better vision. Better defensively. Just, a completely different player altogether.

Unlike you though, I haven't seen him in person. I've seen practically every video of him around, but that's not the same. I guess I'll trust your judgement since you do a great job with your player analysis with overseas players.

That's why I said a more skilled Vesey. They are just skating hard, without thinking. Podkolzin looks like a headless chicken when he has some bounces going against him. He lacks composure.

Sounds more like a skilled Hagelin.

I love the tenacity and edge he plays with, especially as a 17 year old "Russian" kid. He engages in physical battles and doesn't why away from contact. His stride needs some work. I see what you're talking about where he looks like a headless chicken at times.

A more skilled Hagelin, imo, can translate into a top-line forechecking monster.

Shame he wants to spend more time in Russia and continue his development. It's probably best though. I prefer the guy we select isn't 3 years away from coming to NA.

I still, after all these years, do not understand how this is considered a bad thing. It didn't hurt Panarin, Kuznetsov, Tarasenko or even Malkin to stay in Russia until they were at least 21.

It’s different when the team’s are picking these guys in the top 10, GMs generally feel like they don’t have the leeway to wait that long for help if their team is that bad

if a player is NHL-ready, sure. But I don't see the point in having them play in the AHL as an 18 or 19-year old.

They feel closer, teams have more control, ability to put them into the NHL. I’m not saying it’s the right way to do things, but GMs care more about their jobs than the long term future of the team
