Yeah pretty much if a team is valuing a D pick over a forward, Zadina could slide if Montreal really is locked in on Kotkaniemi

I'm not sure I believe it yet but we'll see what happens.

I'd give up #9 and one of the late first round picks in order to draft Zadina for sure

That's a good question and hypothetical trade proposals are very much not my thing.

But, if I were to venture a guess, I'd say moving up to 5 would probably cost you one of the other firsts. So something along the lines of 9+28 for 5.

Of course it depends on whether the Rangers think a guy there is significantly better than what's available 9.

I think they are intrigued by Tkachuk and, maybe to a lesser extent, Hughes. Not sure how aggressive they'd be or how they view those two in comparison to other options.

I don't know how they view Zadina, perhaps they view him as a tier apart from the other guys and they pay that price.

It depends on who goes third and to a lesser extent fourth.

If Kotkaniemi and Dobson happen to go third and fourth, and they believe one of Zadina or Tkachuk is going to be there at 7, they might be more content to seek a swap with Vancouver at a lower cost --- saying 9+ 2nd round pick.
Just a gut feelling or are you basing this on some kind of source or rumor?

Spitballing here -

If you think Dobson is a right handed, legit first pairing prospect who can move the puck, shut down opposing players and play 25-30 mins, that’s a very attractive package. It basically checks all the key boxes you want on the blue line.

It’s all about perception for any of these kids. If you think Kotkaniemi is a first line center, if you think Dobson, Bouchard and Hughes are first pair guys, if you think Boqvist is durable, etc.

Exactly...his play in the Memorial Cup boosted his stock to the point where he’s viewed by some as someone you can build a defense around. Conversely, the Bobfather has Zadina dropping.

Based on historical data, the draft pick value chart is a little off.

It's going to take 28 to move up to 6 or 39 to move to 7. I know it seems high, but the latest equivalent trade was 7 for 9+40. We may get a late pick back later, but that's going to be the price.

My thinking is that if both Tkachuk and Hughes are available at 6, we'll trade for 7. If only one is available, we'll trade for 6. If neither are available, it either means something crazy like Zadina dropping or all of our favorite guys went too early and we'll just see what's left at 9.

It's a high price to pay to move up. I think the Rangers are 110% prepared to pay that price to get their guy. I don't expect more than two picks in the 1st. Potentially no more than 3 within the top 48.

(Cough) I think they are intrigued by Tkachuk and Hughes, especially the former.
Pls stop setting me up for disappointment

I want Tkachuk so f***ing bad man if we trade up for him I’m gonna freak like when the Chiefs traded up for Mahomes

First off, the zucc stuff is weird. I think RB might be on to something with it being Zucc’s brother (and then it wouldn’t be so weird, then it would be funny, and kinda cool)

But regarding the rangers. Look, if the other team is willing to move the guy, the rangers have the pieces to get that guy, if they want to draft a guy, they have the pieces to get that guys.

I think this is a unique opportunity, I think the needs of other teams are such that the rangers and the other teams can each win the trades, and I think the rangers should be really aggressive in getting those players and picks to take such players. Pay the premium when the juice is worth the squeeze. Don’t worry about public opinion

The best case scenario for the Rangers is Kotkaniemi going to Montreal at 3 and both Bouchard and Dobson going before our pick somewhere. If that happens, I couldn't care less what the other picks are in the top 8. We're getting someone phenomenal at 9.

Tkachuk won't drop from top 5, OTOH Hughes is a possibility to be there at 6-7.

Not sure what to make of this, but I think this is the kind of player Gorton could use a 2nd or maybe a 3rd on.

Has anyone ranked him in the 1st at this point? You're getting a guy who has improved his stock since being drafted in the 2nd AND he's got a decent shot of being in the NHL next season (depending on the team).

I know we have 26 and 28, but is that too high for a player like this? Someone who was overage (Tanner Pearson) went 30th in the next draft.

I would take Mascherin in the 2nd round only because there can be some real serious game breaking potential players later in the 1st (all depending on how the selections play out).

I keep seeing this. People saying we must get one of Bokk or Kaut. We are heading into Jared Staal territory again. We are group-think obsessing over two players that are not good enough to pick at 9 but will likely not be there when we pick at 26/28. The board will inevitably melt down when we don't get one of them since they will likely have been taken and immediately crucify whoever we do take with those picks.

Happens every year. Like last year, some bashed the Chytil pick (the Lias one was understandable, but he is no where near being a bad prospect).... :shakehead

So many factors have to fall into place.

Remember this team was also intrigued by Keller, Glass, Pettersson.

Its funny. Yesterday the report is that Montreal is all aboard the Kotkaneimi train. Today news is the Habs had dinner with Tkachuk. So which is it?

Or...maybe in case they do swing a deal and want other options if they miss their first guy.

All this means they will probably draft someone entirely different!

You've been smokescreened ;)

And we couldn't trade up to get either one of those. Johansen back in 2010 too, so frustrating, this team bled picks for stop gaps all those years before they woke up.....

True, but I’d say that Gorton is in a much better position to move up now than he was in the case of Keller etc. He has a bevvy of draft picks AND quality players available.

That being said, the GMs above him have to be willing to move down (although it appears a few may be).

@Edge regarding Jay O'Brien: here's an article where he mentions that he opted to stay closer to home rather than joining the Youngstown Phantoms in the USHL. He obviously crushed it for Thayer, and the video available of him is really promising. His draft thread has some good clips. Here's a snippet from the article:

Now it’s on to the prep school season – Thayer held its first practice on Thursday – where O’Brien is expected to put up big numbers for a strong, senior-laden team.
Give him credit for doing it his way.
O’Brien could have skipped his senior year at Thayer and played for Youngstown of the United States Hockey League, an option that many NHL scouts and front-office people might have preferred because the competition in the USHL is so much much stronger than prep school.
Instead, he opted to stay home. “There’s something to be said for going to class with your guys, being around them all day, seeing your classmates in the stands. It’s pretty cool,″ he said.

Mark Divver: Staying home is working out well for PC recruit Jay O'Brien

IIRC, Mark was in here talking about O'Brien a week or so back.

I think we didn't discuss the possibility of Ottawa givinf the 4th pick for Colorado, who Colorado would pick? I don't have any idea what they need in their team, if they would be open to trade back for more picks... It's a nice change of discussion.

That could be a toss up between Zadina or a quality blueliner — especially if they plan to move Barrie.
