Salary Cap: Dr Dubas Cap Thread: He wants the Nurse

I was just going on the assumption that MacFarland would want to change how the Preds play, with more puck movers. Also, GMs sometimes inherit contracts they do not want.

Anyway, my Viggo Bjorck lust has reached unhealthy proportions. So I will stop now.
I can see the logic of him wanting to reshape the team with his vision and there are probably guys he would rather not have, but I have trouble with Girard being the basis to move up from 22 to 9. If we included a 2nd? Still probably not. If we took Saros off their hands and he approved it? Now we're talking. I'm guessing if he wants Girard, he can just wait a year until he hits FA. If he ends up signing an extension with someone else? No big loss. Just my thoughts, but I do applaud spitballing!

I think getting into the top 10 (sans maybe 9ov) might be too tough, as it always is. Question might be, how far does he drop? Say you get to 10ov, if you don't get Bjorck, christ you could get Belchetz, Lawrence, Rudolph, or Smits. Still probably worth it.
What realistic package can we part with to do so?

I feel like 9-12 is most likely Lawrence, Rudolph, Belchetz, and Cullen in some order (people love Smits). Maybe Gustafsson. I kind of feel like the sweet spot to trade up would be 11-14. That way you aren't paying the top 10 premium but at 11-12 you'd get a similar talent. 13-14 expect to target Gustafsson or Hemming who are a little less exciting but a step up from the rest.

Unless one of those fall, you're getting a similar talent at 15 as 22 in fact anybody else might be there at 22. So unless your scouts loved someone in particular I wouldn't bother moving up to 15 or later.

Now that Brunicke has made leaps defensively, I kind of love the idea of a Gustafsson-Brunicke shutdown duo.

Shame there’s no McKenzie poll but I wonder if Bjorck is higher than we think on team lists. I can’t remember a guy so universally liked yet still consistently ranked like 6-9th

Who are his comps, seems tiny
Bjorck is sort of a poor man's Crosby. He's tried to model himself after Sid including really building up his lower body and plays a lot down low. He's been successful so far against men without getting manhandled as he's already about 180 on his 5'9 frame. Really strong two way center. Has been climbing because he was a top 3 player for Sweden at world's this year and looked good against NHL players with 6 points in 8 games.

It's definitely in part the height. Teams didn't see him as a top 10 guy before worlds. But also I think the weirdness of SJ supposedly fixated on a RD and Vancouver focused on the coaches son. Everyone thinks Stenberg is 2 but getting drafted at 4.

NY picking Carols over Bjorck just feels like a typical Rangers move they might regret.

Kinda feel like with Nurse, Dubas is waiting for Bowman to back himself into a corner with the cap. I don't expect him to pay significant assets for Nurse and would be stunned to see him to pay more than a 3rd
So far the waiting game is working with the contracts to Dickinson and Murphy. Now they have $7.5M left in cap space to sign 5 players.

Nurse, Pettersson, other Pettersson, Thomas, Kyrou, Robertson, Borque, Byram.

Rust, Rakell, Novak, Girard, Graves.

All talked to death.

Somebody give me a potential Pens trade, in or out, nobody is talking about. Knowing Dubas, the move he makes won't have been on anyones radar.

Austin Matthews for Tommy Novak, Justin Brazeau, Bryan Rust and our #22 pick…who says no?

What realistic package can we part with to do so?
I've had a few variations here and there but here's been my basic path:
1. Nurse + EDM 26 2nd (52) for <Insert return, several things make sense>
2. 52 + 54 to Calgary for 35
3. 22, 35, 39 for 15 or maybe 11?

I could also see something like 22+39+McGroarty for 11/15.

Why 11/15? They belong to St Louis. Only team with 2 in the top 15 so I put them with the greatest likelihood to let one loose.

Other possible scenario which is a tad cleaner - 25 for Rakell+70, 22+25+Koivunen for 11. That would be a similar price tag as 12 last year. Just depends on St Louis believing who they like will also be there at 15. Or maybe someone we really like falling to 15.

That's why I've targeted 11/15. I think you're right in that 10-15 is a similar player then 15-22 is probably similar. If we can't move up to get Bjorck, I'm probably just fine sticking at 22 and taking Klepov.

5'9

If he were 6'0, he'd be going 1/2. Let's just hope that plays to our advantage.

Don't threaten me with a good time.

Staples even acknowledges this is likely the Oilers just trying to negotiate through the media to get a better return

Exactly…Savoie or a first round pick…it’s a failure to help the Oilers out of their cap situation and take this guy with no sweetener coming back
I don't want Nurse in general... BUT... Assuming they would retain. Which I am aware that the purpose of moving Nurse is to gain cap space. I would take whatever retention was Edmonton's ceiling even if that meant the accompanying asset was less or less. Does that mean something like they retain 20-25% and send a third with him for.... Whatever. I could see that making sense. But I do not want Nurse at 100% his cap hit in any form or function even if it were only for "future considerations".
