Been a Swiss fan for a while, but not digging them anymore. The quality is down big time, not like they were a few years ago. Average at best. Gone out of the box and hitting up High Voltage. It was a learning curve at first, however the ingredients are top quality, taste is awesome, and I'm liking the spices before grilling. My current fav by a long shot. Queen on 50th is my second, but only if its full in there. They pawn off burnt meat if there's no customers and its been sitting for a while, pretty bad and tastes like a burnt steak. BUT... if the meats moving in there, the donairs are top shelf. Its a gamble in there.

Had a donair poutine from donair stop last week. Little too much sauce, but pretty good overall.

My buddies and I used to crush donairs after the outdoor rink all the time. Nikki's in Westmount (not sure if it is still there) was awesome, and only edged by Swiss in my opinion.

Castledowns outdoor rink -> Swiss donair is always a good choice. Unfortunately, I live in Calgary now and the outdoor rinks are wiped by late January to Late February by the god dang chinooks. My drive to eat donairs is down in a big way with no hockey to precede it.

Swiss is a decent fix but yea, I agree. Probably became complacent with all the kudos they've been getting all those years.

Doesn't help they have so many people hired, probably need to justify paying so many people, why not cut some corners.

I mean, even their donair poutine, when it first came out was fresh. Now they just microwave the whole box after assembling

I moved back to Edmonton a year ago but before that I was in Calgary for three years. During that time I tried a lot of crap Donairs and things people called Donairs but weren't even close.

Then I found Uncle Moes Donairs.

Go to the Edmonton Trail location and tell Basil the owner that Brad @iwantadonair sent you. He will take care of you.

Enjoy!

You're in luck, I've tried many places. Standouts for me:
-Pita Grill, 18st.south east. My favorite. Best donairs imo, and hands down best baklava.
-Desert Pita:NE. Great donair
-Jimmy's A&A Mediterranean Deli: best bang for your buck. Massive donairs.

Some more donair reading for you: http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=55200&highlight=donair

Have you tried Uncle Moe's?

I agree with you that Jimmy's is good but without a doubt Moes is the best in YYC.

I haven't lived in Edmonton since 96', but my god I crush a couple of Donairs everytime I'm back to see the family.

They live near Southgate, and I'd like to get a few suggestions of anything that isn't too far of a drive.

Sofar I've been going off of the Urbanspoon recommendations for the area and found 2 places (not sure how they stack up to the other recommendations in here). I really like them both but I don't really have an idea of what would be better:

Pizza Unlimited and Fried Chicken (Total hole in the wall but delicious)
http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/131/158...il/Pizza-Unlimited-and-Fried-Chicken-Edmonton

High Voltage Food and Coffee (Was good, but seems a bit too 'commercial, and tidy to be a REAL donair)
http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/131/143...ustrial/High-Voltage-Food-Coffee-Bar-Edmonton

Can anyone give me an honest assessment of those places? or if there are any other better ones within a stone throw?

Pizza Unlimited is pretty great. Donairs and Pizza. Haven't tried the fried chicken. Not the best I've ever had, but certainly good for a fix.

I actually really like High Voltage.

my god the donair thread is back. This doesn't exist here in Korea. I would eat Swiss weekly back home. I grew up in the townhouses a block down from swiss... it is my life line.

Kebabs aren't the same. I WANT A DONAIR.

Yup. Think Im gonna get one today.

Is it 11 yet?:help:

Oh wait!

They open at 10!

I've definitely got to try Simon King one of these days...

My current favorite is Marco's Famous on 104th ave. Swiss is pretty good, too.

I tried High Voltage, but it doesn't compare to Swiss or Marco's.
