Can you imagine how much more relevant hockey as a sport would be if the team in New York had been even halfway decent in the 50s and 60s and 70s? My god...
Then I'd be angry with the leaders of the NHL at the time because before the draft, the system was set up for the Rangers to fail. As much as a team like the Yankees benefitted from the pre-draft system in their league, the Rangers absolutely were at a disadvantage. Since then though, yeah, it's all on the various NYR ownership and front office groups.
I get what
@Megustaelhockey is saying about wanting to win a bunch.
Even our Cup win was a one-and-done team of old mercenaries that had Leetch get hot at the right time. They were never winning it outside of that year, and tbh, the organization
mostly wasted Leetch's talent
.
Not entirely true. They were a cup favorite in '92. '93 season was covered on here as just a mess between injuries, locker room issues and just bad luck. They got f***ed by the lockout in '95. They did end up making a couple of trades for older players to bolster the cup in '94 but Leetch was 25, Zubov 23, Graves 25, Kovalev 20, Beuk 28, Richter 27. Messier was 33 but he was even a +PPG for three more years after. Yeah, they traded Amonte (23) but Matteau was only 24 and Noonan 28. Hell, even Tikkanen was "only" 29 and Nemchinov 30. Where they really f***ed up was '95 onward and the player movement then along with Smith's horrible drafting.
We flipped some states blue there. West Virginia and Kentucky even know what hockey is?
Well since they evidently follow the Rangers....technically no?!?!
Andersson was off the board and ranked #15 or so. Everyone wanted Pettersson, myself included, but didn't expect him to be there at #7. Makar was also a very spirited debate if he was there. Necas and Suzuki were my guys that year.
There were substantiated rumors (From Dreger+) that they tried to trade up for Pettersson but they couldn't get Canucks (aka Linden) to bite. In the end we can talk about early and/or late draft picks. Luck vs drafting profile, etc etc. As a fan, in the end, it doesn't matter why or how. They just need some kind of top end talent out of the draft, especially in a capped league, and they've just failed at doing so. Until they do, it's going to just be more of the same going forward.
