Does Trocheck put the Rangers over the top?

Nope. He’s an upgrade at center but not a large one.

Our kids taking the next step and the entire team staying healthy for the PO's is what's going to determine if we're ready to compete for the cup.
Pens? As in Pittsburgh Penguins? I see them as a team that will likely just miss a wild card.

Kane/JT Miller might along with 2 out of Laf, kaako, kravstov, chytil breaking out.
No. He's an improvement over Strome in theory, but we'll need to see how he meshes with Panarin. It may end up a downgrade offensively.
What would put us over the top is a major leap from Lafreniere or Kakko (or even Kravtsov), combined with the continued development of Miller, Schneider, and possibly Jones or Lundkvist.
Even then, it probably takes a TDL acquisition to help mask whatever our biggest weakness is, to truly put us over the top.
We should be in good position for at least the next few years, though.

Yeah this, need growth from the young top picks and in general every cup team fills some holes or needs at the TDL to help out

If a person watched the playoffs this year, then comes to the conclusion Kane will put the Rangers over the top, I am questioning several things. First and foremost, I am questioning their sanity, then were they really watching the 2013 playoffs.
Trocheck is a good signing. This team needs speeds and ability to get and keep the puck in the offensive zone. VT gives the Rangers more ability in that respect than Copp and much more than Strome. Looking at the contracts doled out, the Rangers did it at a fair market price

If everything stays the same as it was last year, performance wise for everyone else still here, but now we have Trocheck, I can't see the needle being moved TOO much. Have to see how he fits with Panarin, if that is even where he eventually ends up.
Everything matters on the what K'Filaapo Laftsov does in terms of putting us *over the top*.
I would think the most realistic scenario is we go into the playoffs in a similar position as last year. Not a bad thing!

I am not sure there is such a thing as realistically putting a team "over the top"
Being 50/50, or slightly better, to win any playoff series against any opponent they may run into is probably about as close as teams get to being considered over the top. And even then the probability of winning 2, 3, 4 coin flips straight is still not all that high. Injuries, performances, officiating, variance, and match-ups come into play.
I think they'll be pretty good though.

This team is better than the team that started last year and with more defined expectations under Gallant. 2C upgrade, Kravs back, no Nemeth, more depth, another year of experience for Kakko, Laf, Chytil, Miller, Schneider, Shesty etc., a possibility of other top prospects to push for a roster spot. There is not 1 team in the east that is clearly better.

They are all a year older than they were last year, when the Penguins weren't close to being the best team in the East either.

Jarry is a big reason why I don’t worry about the Pens at all.
