Ok. So let’s pull this thread.

Panarin to me was the most egregiously ineffective of our stars, but the bottom line is that we lost because their top guns outplayed ours. We didn’t lose because they were deeper or got better goaltending.

So, moving forward, these are the things that need to happen for the Rangers to win the Cup:

1. Our stars play better than the other team’s stars next time.
2. The kids become our stars and play better than the other team’s stars.
3. The kids improve, our stars hold par, but we win because of overwhelming depth.

We’re in a Trocheck thread. I don’t think he factors into this, unless his presence enables my #1 to happen.

I am personally very, very excited to see what the kids look like next year.
I agree with all of this. And you're right Panarin wasn't good enough in the playoffs. I believe it was a combination of him not being healthy, trying to do too much on his own, and his linemates not being effective enough.

I think Trocheck will make an impact. I'm not against the player at all. I liked him even when he was with FLA. I'm not sure 7 years is the best thing. But, it's whatever at this point. He's a clear upgrade to both Strome and Copp.

Copp and vatrano were deadline additions. Played what? 50 games for the rangers?

Vatrano was miscast in the top 6. Should have been playing on the third line. Moving laf to that line instantly makes us better.

Trocheck is an upgrade on Strome. That isn’t even close by the way.

One of our biggest weaknesses is winning a damn face off. Strome couldn’t get out of his own way at the dot.

Copp was a solid 2/3 line player. I liked him. But for the same price trocheck was and is the better player. Trocheck makes us a better team. I don’t think strome is terrible but his major uptick in production had ALOT to do with playing with panarin. If you don’t think trocheck will see a similar uptick in production then I don’t know what to tell you.

So for me we are a better team today

Edit: I’d also like to add laf played well on the top line last season and was one of our best three players in the playoffs. So saying he couldn’t hold down a top 6 spot is disingenuous at best

Yea, I think if you look at who played in the top 6 for the entire year, Laf is an upgrade at RW on the Mika line and Trocheck is an upgrade centering the breadline.

Then look at who was on the RW of the breadline. Hunt was on their RW for more minutes than any other player (289m). Next was Kakko (162m) then Goodrow (120m). Panarin, Strome, and Copp were only on the ice together for 111 minutes. I expect Trocheck and Kakko or Kravtsov to both be better than any combination that Panarin played with last season including Copp. Maybe it takes a month or 2 to find their chemistry together, but it will come together eventually.

Kids Laffy and Kakko need to make the leap.

I still contend that Trocheck is BETTER and a better fit for GGs system than anyone who departed

There are a number of other young players whose development arc is still pointing up

Lastly one of Cuylle Othman Kravstov etc could surprise

I am no where near ready to assume this will be a worse team than last years.

Need to see how these things listed above play out first.
I think they could be better than last year. But we lost more players than we gained.

I'm in agreement. There's a lot trending upward. My main concern is Gallant overusing certain players and blocking Lafreniere and Kakko. The 4th line is a major concern. Carpenter should be here as competition for the young players (Cuylle) for a 4th line spot. My concern is Gallant will over-rely on Carpenter who doesn't produce.

The scary thing to me is that this teams window will be short.

We have until Igor hits UFA. Then it's gonna be a radically different team one way or another.
