Not the 34-year-old version, and I never disputed what he was 10 years ago.

Never mind.
Patrick Kane put up 92 points on a horrible hawks team…..you’re right.

Never mind.

Currently we're a worse team than the one we started playoffs with. It will all depend on how the kids mature, what we add at the deadline and how healthy Shesterkin is.
Ughhhhhh what……

Not worried about any besides Kakko. Laf just needs the ice time. K’Andre has been broken out for a while. Chytil broke out in the playoffs. Schneider will at the very least be a top 4 RHD
I want to see Chytil do this over the course of a season.

I’m kinda worried about Kakko too, but I want to see how he responds to the Game 6 scratch. This season is nut cutting time for him.

Laf and Miller are legit, I agree with that.

Progress from the Kid Line, Kravstov as a 35-40 point player, one of Cullye/Edstrom/Trivigno stealing a spot, and Zac Jones nailing down that 3rd pairing spot will make the Rangers officially ready for prime time >> Trocheck individual contributions.

Currently we're a worse team than the one we started playoffs with. It will all depend on how the kids mature, what we add at the deadline and how healthy Shesterkin is.

Better than the start of last season though.

Keep in mind folks...BEFORE all the trade deadline moves this team was pretty damn good with one of the best records in the NHL.

Next year you have a number of key youngsters still on an upward development arc. Lafreniere, Chytil, Kakko, Schneider, Miller.

Now youve added a guy who is a better system fit in Trocheck than any of the guys who left.

Further you have Blais who is supposed to be a good Gallant fit and more skilled than Reaves returning.

Lastly you figure at least one of Kravstov, Othmann, Rydahl or Cuylle make the team and provide at least a bit of an upgrade.

All in all, it should be an improved team over last years with the youngsters improving and better fitting peices like Trocheck and Blais playing.
Gallant had Reaves play 69 regular season games, and 18 of 20 playoff games.

It's as close to a guarantee as you can get that all of the ex-Gallant players will continue to play. Reaves, Trocheck, Carpenter.

Blais hasn't played since November 16th. He's 26 and his career total is 35 points. Before he got injured he scored 4 points in 14 games, no goals.

This team now is not as good as it was in the playoffs. It's very possible and even likely they take a step backwards. I have faith the kids will continue to progress. But the 3rd and 4th lines will be a huge problem if Lafreniere and Kakko are in the top six where they belong.

No one knows how next season will go, but I ask everyone one (not so) simple question:

Why did they lose to TBL?

To me, the biggest single reason is that Panarin got absolutely wrecked by Kucherov.

Zib and Kreider cancelled out Stamkos and Palat for the most part. The largest discrepancy was between the star Russian wingers.

My biggest hope for Trocheck is that he counteracts the bad habits we grew to expect from the Panarin-Strome duo. If that happens, and Panarin gets back to being a consistent play driver and not just a PP point compiler, it almost doesn’t matter what the kids do.

Of course, the fact that we have four young forwards in the lineup who should all be several steps ahead of where they were last season gives the team a decent amount of margin for error.

Gallant needs to find a better ice time distribution amongst the top 9, not wear these guys out, and head into the playoffs healthy. Hopefully they can win a series in less than seven games once they get there.

Way to early to tell. While Trochek appears to be an upgrade what will determine where this team will be if the kids take the next step.

This will be the case for the next few years we can improve every year naturally or will stay stagnant.

Poll choices are stupid.

Yes, Trocheck makes this team better up the middle than they were last year.

Agreed. I look at the team and they theoretically can be better and probably should be better but at the same time, it's contingent on the kids taking another step. The defense should be better just removing Nemeth and hopefully inserting Jones. I think Halak in for Georgiev is a wash at best as Halak may be a better backup but Georgiev was better when getting consistent starts. The forward group, Trocheck is a much better fit than Copp or Strome for what the Rangers need but they lost a lot of solid pieces from the team in Copp, Strome, Vatrano, Motte, etc that the kids will have to make up. That being said, they also ditched a lot of net negative pieces for this team in Nemeth, Rooney, and McKegg.

So yeah, I think they're better but too early to tell and they may and probably will need more pieces at the deadline.

The way I see it is if Panarin can't play w Trocheck we're worse... probably much worse.

If the kids don't take massive strides I also fear we're worse because they need to be Buch, Copp, and Vatrano effective and more importantly start showing up on the scoresheet w consistency.

Worst case scenario:

- Winning the lottery twice was a curse not a gift

- Signing Panarin when we did w how much cap we spent is a mistake because no one can play w him and his game doesn't translate to the playoffs.

Stamkos scored 5 goals in the series, two that ended our season. Palat scored 4 goals in the series. Together they combined for 9 goals and 15 points in the series. They were not canceled out.

Panarin scored 59 EVEN STRENGTH points.
Strome scored 54 points TOTAL.
Trocheck scored 51 points TOTAL for CAR.

All elite players pad their stats on the PP. McDavid had 45 PP points. Panarin isn't a PP point compiler. His 59 even strength points would be Trocheck's 2nd highest career total in points and would be Strome's career high in points.

Kucherov played with Stamkos. Where is the equivalent of Stamkos that Panarin had to play with?

I agree with this. I think Drury, like a lot of fans got pretty angry with Panarin and understood that the Strome / Panarin marriage had to be dissolved.

Whether or not Trocheck will ultimately be Panarins center remains to be seen, but it will likely be either him or Mika and that will make for a much more balanced line defensively.

A lot of fans wanted to give Panarin a pass because he was injured, but I’ll say it again, his poor play in the playoffs was mainly mental mistakes, bad decision making.

I do believe Panarin will learn from last years experience. Whether or not he will apply it consistently throughout next years playoffs is another story, but at the very least Drury helped close the 5on5 gap in signing Trocheck.

He also knows he won’t have as much cap space to make the type of additions he made last season so he had to get the right guy in here even if he had to overextend on the term to do it

The way I see it, we certainly didn't get any worse.

Our biggest strengths (Igor, the Powerplay) aren't going to take any major steps backwards, while our biggest weaknesses (center depth, faceoffs, defensive structure from our forward group) SHOULD get a boost.

Blais + Kravtsov should be able to replace Vatrano rather easily.
Carpenter in for Motte is maybe a slight downgrade but he plays the PK just as well and improves an area we suck at which is winning draws.
Trocheck is a very clear upgrade to Strome, no doubt about it.
The key will be if the production from the kids can outweigh the impact Copp had.

The rest of the team is the same, and most of it is young and should presumably take some steps forward. Health will obviously be key and if you can save money for a deadline acquisition or two, we should be in a great spot to improve upon this past season.

The PK changes are what are going to help greatly. Blais will be back on PK (which prior to injury was fantastic)

Plus possibly having Trochek on pk instead of Zib could help by giving Zib some extra rest.

Ok. So let’s pull this thread.

Panarin to me was the most egregiously ineffective of our stars, but the bottom line is that we lost because their top guns outplayed ours. We didn’t lose because they were deeper or got better goaltending.

So, moving forward, these are the things that need to happen for the Rangers to win the Cup:

1. Our stars play better than the other team’s stars next time.
2. The kids become our stars and play better than the other team’s stars.
3. The kids improve, our stars hold par, but we win because of overwhelming depth.

We’re in a Trocheck thread. I don’t think he factors into this, unless his presence enables my #1 to happen.

I am personally very, very excited to see what the kids look like next year.

Kids Laffy and Kakko need to make the leap.

I still contend that Trocheck is BETTER and a better fit for GGs system than anyone who departed

There are a number of other young players whose development arc is still pointing up

Lastly one of Cuylle Othman Kravstov etc could surprise

I am no where near ready to assume this will be a worse team than last years.

Need to see how these things listed above play out first.

The improvement will come from more Lafreniere and Kakko. I've got a fever. And the only prescription. Is more Lafreniere and Kakko.

Added Trochek, Kravtsov, Blais and Carpenter
Lost Strome, Copp, Braun, Vatrano, Motte and ofcourse Rooney
This is worth talking about. If we went into the playoffs last year with what we have now vs what we had going into the PO, we would have been better off? We would have still made the ECF? Beaten Tampa?

I would say @KreiderBomb is right, if we are talking about last year. BUT, this year is NOT last year. We aren't the only team that will be different (aside from NYI, lol).
I am more excited about our outlook going into this year then the outlook going into last years PO.
Ultimately, we will only be better off if our youngest improve, and I am betting for it.

I’m confused how you think we are worse….
Are you in the "Strome is not an Nhl player camp" if you are don't even bother reading further.
Copp, Strome, Vatrano were all top 6 players last year. The only guy we added to replace that currently is Trochek. We're banking on two of the kids being able to hold down a top 6 spot, they weren't able to last year, there's optimism that they will but will they be better than Copp and Vatrano? As a duo, there's really nothing suggesting that right now. And even if they are what does Kakko and Lafreniere coming off the third line do to that line?
However, as i said in my original post it all depends on whether the kids take a step, and what we add at the deadline however the current lineup has more holes in it than the one we finished with.
Having said all that, i like our team, and i do have faith Lafreniere will be better this year and hopefully Kakko comes to camp lighter and faster. Kravtsov and Blais are wildcards as well.

Copp and vatrano were deadline additions. Played what? 50 games for the rangers?

Vatrano was miscast in the top 6. Should have been playing on the third line. Moving laf to that line instantly makes us better.

Trocheck is an upgrade on Strome. That isn’t even close by the way.

One of our biggest weaknesses is winning a damn face off. Strome couldn’t get out of his own way at the dot.

Copp was a solid 2/3 line player. I liked him. But for the same price trocheck was and is the better player. Trocheck makes us a better team. I don’t think strome is terrible but his major uptick in production had ALOT to do with playing with panarin. If you don’t think trocheck will see a similar uptick in production then I don’t know what to tell you.

So for me we are a better team today

Edit: I’d also like to add laf played well on the top line last season and was one of our best three players in the playoffs. So saying he couldn’t hold down a top 6 spot is disingenuous at best
