I've been a fan of both since the 80's (Dodgers a bit more since I live in the shadow of Dodger Stadium) and there was no rivalry, you could root for both with no repercussions, heck everytime I think about 86' I still get a lump in my stomach.

The "rivalry" didn't really start till 2003, when all these Angel fans came out of the woodwork after the World Series because most of them weren't there before.

and like mentioned above its media driven and fans choose to hate teams by what the media says and not by what happens on the field.

I agree about the Angels fans coming out of the woodwork. My Dad had season tickets to the Angels for 4 years in the late 80's and early 90's. There were rarely games that sold out. I remember looking around the Stadium and wondering if they ever sold all the seats. Granted the stadium was ginormous then. I guess you could make fun of the Angels fans back in 2003 or 2004 but we're over 10 years removed from the World Series win and people are still showing up to the games. They may have jumped on the bandwagon back then but they've stayed on. Regardless, I don't see why that bothers anyone who is a Dodger fan. I honestly think it is envy because the Dodgers have sucked for a considerable amount of time. Maybe sucked is the wrong word but the Dodgers haven't won **** since Kirk Gibson was around and I think there are a lot of bitter Dodger fans out there for that reason. The Angels haven't won anything since 2002 either but they have been more competitive in their league than the Dodgers have.

It's more of a bragging rights thing than anything with the standings, same thing in Chicago, although it's a lot more heated here, IMO.

I obviously have a lot of buddies from back home who are Dodger fans and I love rubbing it in that the Angels have dominated the freeway series, even though it really does mean nothing in the big picture, it's no different than dominating Kansas City.

As far as the playoffs go, I root for whoever the Dodgers are playing, although if they ever make it back to the World Series against someone like Texas, Boston or the Pathetics I would be rooting for the Dodgers, and I'm sure Dodger fans feel the same way with the Angels (you guys were all Angel fans in 2002 correct?)

I'm sure that is part of it but there seems to be some angst among fans. It wasn't like this when I was growing up. I think at one time it was acceptable to like both teams.

Why? They don't even compete against each other. Yeah, they play a few games a year but they aren't competing for the same playoff spots. Do you hate the A's?

Why do you keep comparing the Angels to the A's? It doesn't geographically make sense as far as the Dodgers go. Even though the Dodgers and the Angels aren't in the same division/league, there are still bragging rights. I'm pretty sure majority of A's and Giants fans dislike each other. I really don't need to deny that there is no rivalry when I know deep inside I dislike the other team.

Well, I'm like Dawdler, I'd root for either team. I don't care about baseball though. I actually consider myself a Tigers fan but having watched more games than one could stomach from 2003-2008, I got burnt out on baseball. I'm over trying to follow any other sport other than hockey. I casually watch the NFL and NCAA football. But if the Dodgers or Angels get into the playoffs, I'd want both to win. If they made it to the World Series, I'd probably root for the Dodgers since they haven't won in a long time but I really wouldn't care either way. In fact, it would be a treat to watch everyone get really angry at each other.

It's my indifference to baseball and these "rivalries" that make me feel like a real jack ass whenever I get upset about something related to the Kings. Winning the Cup once (and now twice) has definitely taken away from that. I got this little puppy dog on my beer league team that you'd think was the filibuster in congress to convince me that the Ducks are a better team and why I should root for them. It is so damn annoying that I want the Kings to beat the Ducks in all situations just to piss him off. I told him a hundred times that I don't necessarily hate the Ducks (ok, I do) but that I like the Kings and I don't care about the Ducks. That really is the truth of the matter. I just don't care about the Ducks. I don't care about the Ducks prospects. I don't care who won GM of the year. I don't care about Art Ross or Hart trophies.. blah blah blah. All I care about is the Kings winning the trophy that matters and beating the Ducks and Sharks in the process makes it even better because that means they won't be winning it.

You hate the Giants I would presume, right? Well, the A's are like 5 miles away from San Francisco so why would you not hate them too? i mean you said the division/league doesn't matter. Do the bragging rights stop at the west side of the bay? It seems very arbitrary to me. Again, this disdain you and other people seem to have developed came about in the last 15 years. The Angels and Dodgers coexisted peacefully for about 40 years prior to that. You don't see how this could be kinda odd to people on the outside?

The A's don't have any history against the Dodgers though. Giants/Dodgers is one of the best real rivalries in sports.

I wouldn't be too sure about "peaceful." There was always dislike because it's a matter of taste. 15 years is a pretty long time now anyway so I don't see any reason to wonder why this is a rivalry.

The A's and Dodgers have more history with each other than the Dodgers and Angels do. The only thing relevant to both the Dodgers/Angels fans is the market is shared. That is why I keep bringing up the A's. No Dodger fan seems to even remotely care about the A's yet they completely disdain their next door neighbors, the Giants, because they are the same division/league. One could deduce that since the A's are not in the same League/Division, Dodgers fans don't care. But for some reason they care about Angels. The only reason is the geographical location of the team. I'm sorry but I just find it contrived to be honest. There is no rivalry between the Dodgers/Angels. Just a pack mentality amongst a bunch of fans.

I was born in 1980 and went to a whole slew of baseball games from the mid 80's until about 1993 or so. Actually, I think my interest in baseball completely disappeared when they had the lockout in the 90's. I wasn't exactly old back then but yeah, I'm going to say there was nothing going on like the BS I hear now. Then again, people weren't killing each other outside the parking lots back then either. So maybe it is just society changing more than it is a rivalry developing.

I grew up a fan of both, but I started leaning towards the Angels as I got older. I still root for the Dodgers when they're not playing the Angels, though.

Yeah, that's just hownit is nd you have to deal with it. The Dodgers used to be the only competitive local team and now the Angels are good so naturally, Dodger fans are
pissed that their team isn't the only good team anymore. I just don't know why you're complaining about the hostility between Angels and Dodger fans. I can tell that guys like Nose of sutter have hated the Dodgers years even before the Angels won the WS. I also don't know why you want to relive the past when it was "peaceful" between the two fan bases.

Which is quite stupid if you ask me. I guess human nature started about 15 years ago. :sarcasm:

I think the rally monkey pissed on the dodger dog and **** got outta hand. That's my theory.

did message boards start to grow 15 years ago? because it seemed all this hate and obnoxiousness among fans started when they found out they can spew any garbage with have diarrhea of the mouth without being held accountable or face any repercussions

I'm dealing with it, man. It's tough but I'll manage. :sarcasm:

I'm not complaining. I just think the "rivalry" is contrived and it seems like you and others seem to agree. That doesn't bother me I just think it is silly. Believe me, I have plenty of fun with it.

I agree and why do teams have to be combative because its not cool to be peaceful anymore?

I also scoff at the Dodgers being being the only local competitive team for a long time, last I checked since 88' both teams have the same number of WS rings.

I do tried to read both message boards of both baseball teams but the insults and stereotyping from both sides is abominable, to say the least

Yup, pretty embarrassing. I have no ill will toward the Angels or their fans. Don't get me started on the Ducks though... :naughty:

Damn.

USC will be missing a potential key contributor at tight end in 2014.

After Monday's first practice of fall camp, coach Steve Sarkisian announced that Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick would miss the season.

While Cope-Fitzpatrick had just one catch last year as a sophomore, he was listed atop the 2014 depth chart according to USCFootball.com. Even though he won't be able to play in any games, he can practice with the team.

With Cope-Fitzpatrick, USC had just three scholarship tight ends on the roster, so now the team is down to two. His absence may open up playing time for freshman Bryce Dixon. Dixon, a four-star recruit according to Rivals, was the No. 5 TE recruit in the country in the class of 2014.

The other scholarship TE is senior Randall Telfer, who had six catches for 78 yards in 2013.
